Big Blue View mailbag: Draft day edition

Big Blue View mailbag: Draft day edition

Let’s answer a few last-minute questions There are still, as I type this, a few hours before the 2019 NFL Draft gets underway. I have received a few stray questions for the BBV Mailbag that won’t be valid post-draft, so to kill some time let’s do an abbreviated mailbag. Billy McAdams asks: What will happen if Dave Gettleman does a terrible job in this draft? He seems to be pretty cocky with his latest comments. Please don’t tell me look at last years draft ... Anyone with half a brain would have grabbed Barkley, and Hernandez ... so far this year he has made a lot of people...

Mississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat checks a lot of “Giants” boxes

Mississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat checks a lot of “Giants” boxes

Sweat might just be scratching the surface of his potential The New York Giants like long, explosive athletes rushing the passer for their defense. While many other things have changed over the last year and a half, that much has not. And with the team all but hanging a “Help Wanted” sign outside of their defensive meeting room, it would be a surprise if they did not find at least one pass rusher in the upcoming draft. And considering that this is an incredibly deep and diverse draft for pass rushers, and defensive linemen in general, it would be a stunning development if the Giants...

How about this for a Giants-Cardinals blockbuster trade?

How about this for a Giants-Cardinals blockbuster trade?

Patrick Peterson and Josh Rosen to Giants in exchange for a passel of draft picks We are deep in the heart of the silliest part of the NFL’s silly season with less than seven hours (as of this writing) remaining until the 2019 NFL Draft opens. We are likely about eight hours away from the New York Giants making their first selection of the draft. But rather than diving back into the “will they or won’t they?” of the draft prospects, let’s take some time out for some truly wild draft speculation. Could the Giants trade for Arizona Cardinals All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson?...

Mock draft tracker: Edge Josh Allen, QB Daniel Jones most popular combo for Giants

How would you feel if things turn out this way? With just hours to go before we find out what surprises GM Dave Gettleman and the New York Giants have in store for us in the 2019 NFL Draft let’s take one final look at mock drafts across the Internet. We have 59 entries in our final mock draft tracker. The player most often mocked to the Giants? In a late rush, that honor goes to Kentucky edge defender Josh Allen, who was the choice in 17 mock drafts (28.8 percent). LSU linebacker Devin White and Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins were the choice in eight mocks (13.6 percent)....

Houston DL Ed Oliver could be a difference maker for the Giants’ defense

Houston DL Ed Oliver could be a difference maker for the Giants’ defense

Dave Gettleman is looking for an impact defensive lineman, and Oliver could be that guy Houston’s Ed Oliver has been one of the most hotly anticipated draft prospects to come out in years, probably since Jadeveon Clowney was drafted in 2014. The 6-foot-2, 285-pound athletic freak has been on the NFL’s radar since he was a coveted high school recruit. He surprised by landing in Houston, but never made any secret of the fact that his goal was to be a top draft pick and play in the NFL. Oliver will finally be drafted this year, and will be one of the first players selected in the 2019...

Giants’ 2019 Draft preview: Addressing narratives as Round 1 approaches

Giants’ 2019 Draft preview: Addressing narratives as Round 1 approaches

Let’s look at some of the potential scenarios as we arrive at the NFL Draft The narratives for the New York Giants as the 2019 NFL Draft dawns are familiar, and the answers are really unknown. You get varying opinions and answers depending upon who you talk to, and sometimes, depending upon what day you talk to those people. You know the narratives. The Giants might select a quarterback with their first pick at No. 6, and that might be the already-Twitter-trashed Daniel Jones of Duke. They might not take a quarterback at all in the draft, kicking the can into 2020. GM Dave Gettleman is...

Chris’ final 7-round Giants mock draft: Giants get franchise QB and a defensive playmaker

Chris’ final 7-round Giants mock draft: Giants get franchise QB and a defensive playmaker

The Giants get a stud defender and their franchise quarterback in the first round The 2019 NFL Draft is very nearly upon us, and it is just a matter of hours until the New York Giants are on the clock for the first time. Before Dave Gettleman turns in the Giants’ first card of 2019, there is just enough time for me to squeeze in my final mock draft of the 2019 draft process. For my mock I decided to use The Draft Network’s mock draft machine with their predictive big board (the same setup as for the Big Blue View Draft-A-Thon). But for myself and my decisions, I stuck to the official...

Giants news, 4/25: Daniel Jones at center of draft rumor mill

Let’s check the headlines as Draft Day begins Good morning, New York Giants fans! It is Draft Day, so we begin with some 2019 NFL Draft rumors that could impact the Giants. Why Chris Simms doesn’t think Giants should waste first-rounder on Daniel Jones | SNY Increasingly, the belief is that the Giants are targeting Jones. ”I’m going to be honest with you: Daniel Jones, for my money, is not worth a top 10 pick,” Simms said. “I don’t really know if Daniel Jones is really a first-round quarterback. As far as where I ranked him at the quarterback position, I believe I made him...

NFL Draft rumor tracker, 4/24: Quinnen Williams says he is “best pass rusher in the draft”

He might be right With the 2019 NFL Draft coming in just a matter of hours, let’s look at some of the news and rumors that might impact the New York Giants. Quinnen Williams told me, in an interview for @SNYtv, he will be a “dominant” player in the NFL. He says he’s the “best pass rusher in the draft”. https://t.co/0HNJOvdCMl— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) April 24, 2019 It is really possible that Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams could fall to the Giants at No. 6? Two teams with ties to Buffalo rumored to be interested in trading up in 2019 NFL Draft - Buffalo...

Kentucky EDGE Josh Allen bet on himself and is now one of the best players in the draft

Kentucky EDGE Josh Allen bet on himself and is now one of the best players in the draft

It’s unlikely that Kentucky EDGE Josh Allen will be available for the Giants, but we can dream It is a measure of just how loaded the 2019 Draft is along the defensive front that any one of the top prospects would likely be a consensus number one selection in almost any other year. One of those players is also a lesson on the importance of patience, work ethic, and player development. Kentucky’s Josh Allen was considered a solid prospect for the 2018 draft and would have been one of the first EDGE players off the board -- though he wouldn’t have challenged Bradley Chubb for the...

Closing the quarterback board: What kind of NFL prospect is Kyler Murray?

Closing the quarterback board: What kind of NFL prospect is Kyler Murray?

We finish with the one QB most unlikely to be available to the Giants The pre-draft series on the quarterback position concludes at the top of the board, with a look at Kyler Murray. The Heisman Trophy winner might not be available past the first selection, but should he fall to a spot where the New York Giants are on the clock, what would - or could - they be getting in this quarterback prospect? In addition, since this is the final piece in the series, we will recap the 10 quarterbacks evaluated with a quick discussion and ranking of them at the end of this scouting profile....

Giants restructure guard Kevin Zeitler’s contract

Giants restructure guard Kevin Zeitler’s contract

New York clears $5 million in cap space ahead of the draft The New York Giants, in need of some cap space ahead of this weekend’s NFL draft, turned to newly acquired guard Kevin Zeitler, who had a $10 million cap hit scheduled for this year, for some help. According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Giants converted $7.5 million of Zeitler’s $10 million base salary into a prorated signing bonus. The move lowers Zeitler’s 2019 base salary to $2.5 million with a $2.5 million of his now converted base pushing his total 2019 cap hit to $5 million. Overall, the move clears $5 million off the...
