Utah names their 2018 football captains

Utah names their 2018 football captains

The Utah football season is starting in just under two weeks, and one of the final steps for the team and coaching staff before the season starts is naming the captains. The players have voted and the team voted for the following guys to be their captains. Lo Falemaka Tyler Huntley Cody Barton Chase Hansen Mitch Wishnowsky Matt Gay Most of those names should be no surprise, and I’m really happy to see Huntley in that group. While I don’t think it’s neccessary for the QB to be a captain, I do think it does help, and shows how assertive the QB is and that he has the teams respect and...

Social Media Round Up from Today’s Utah Football Media Session

Social Media Round Up from Today’s Utah Football Media Session

It was a quiet day up on the Hill for a Utah football media session, as the Utes had a walk through of some game day operations, so it was pretty low key. There were a couple of pretty nice quotes that came out from the coaches, namely Coach Whitt. Happy #RedFridayU from practice at @Rice_Eccles this morning pic.twitter.com/6i5i2G5ZLA— Utah Football (@Utah_Football) August 17, 2018 It’s always great to see Coach A back on campus, he just looks back at home and I can’t wait to see what he can do with the defensive line and game plan for the defense. He’s going to be a great...

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington State’s Offense

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington State’s Offense

It’s no secret that Mike Leach is an offensive wizard. His air raid offense has helped groom top NCAA talent for decades, and entering his seventh season at Washington State, it appears Leach and co. have found a level of consistency in Pullman, finishing no worse than 8-5 since 2015, quickly turning around a rocky start to his tenure. However, a dramatic off-season has left the “Pullman Pirate” searching for answers as the 2018 season approaches. The Washington State community was shocked when presumed starting quarterback Tyler Hilinski took his own life earlier this year. The...

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington State’s defense

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington State’s defense

In three years time, Washington State went from a defensive non-factor to one of the top squads in all of NCAA football. Under the tutelage of former defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch, the Cougars finally had a defensive identity to match head coach, Mike Leach’s high-flying air raid offense, but with Grinch moving on to Ohio State, can they keep the upwards trajectory intact with new coordinator Tracy Claeys? As if the loss of Grinch wasn’t enough, the Cougars also replace most of the key players on their defensive line, including stalwart Hercules Mata’afa, who alone...

Wednesday’s Utah football practice recap

Wednesday’s Utah football practice recap

Another open media day for practice, and another day of really similar storylines, or in some cases the same. That’s great news though, in Utah’s case, since the storylines have been pointing in the right direction and have been positive. High energy practice today with good things on both sides. Huntley continues to control the offense with confidence. Is composed, doesn’t rush the offense and makes good reads. Receivers are helping him out a lot by catching anything he throws their way.— Josh Furlong (@JFurKSL) August 15, 2018 Josh does a great job summing up what so many of...

Utah picks up a running back recruit on Wednesday

Utah picks up a running back recruit on Wednesday

Utah picked up a new running back recruit on Wednesday with the verbal commitment of Micah Bernard, a 5’ 10” 187 pound running back from Cerritos, CA. The three star rated running back (per 24/7 Sports) had a very nice offer list, with offers from not only almost everyone in the Mountain West, but also the likes of Oregon, Washington State and USC. There are some thoughts that he could really pick up some more offers, and maybe more stars, as the season goes along. The next chapter ✅ pic.twitter.com/bfFi63Img2— Micah Bernard (@Icey_MB) August 15, 2018 During his junior year,...

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington’s offense

Utah begins Pac-12 play in week three in a late-night matchup against northern division heavyweight, Washington. Helmed by Chris Petersen, entering his fifth year with the Huskies, and starring senior phenoms Jake Browning (QB) and Myles Gaskin (RB), the Utes will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak against the Huskies and establish themselves as a legitimate contender in the race for the Pac-12 title. Leading a crop of mostly veteran talent is senior quarterback Jake Browning. After an impressive 2016 campaign that ended with the final seed in the College Football Playoff,...

Darren Carrington Signs with Dallas Cowboys

Darren Carrington Signs with Dallas Cowboys

Former Utah Utes and Oregon Ducks wide receiver Darren Carrington II signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Carrington played his first three seasons (plus redshirted) at Oregon before he was dismissed from the team and subsequently transferred to Utah for his senior season. He had a career-high 70 receptions for 980 yards and six touchdowns. Injuries slowed Carrington in Utah’s final few games and hampered him at the NFL Combine. Despite some off-the-field issues at Oregon, he was a model teammate at Utah. Some concerns over previous issues and the injury likely contributed to...

Utah enters final week of fall camp with solid Monday practice

We’re so close to the season, just think next week is game week. I’m so jacked up. We are now in the final week of fall camp before the team moves to game prep late this week and next week. Let’s dive in... Bill Riley had Guy Holliday on his show today, and they talked about his wide outs, one of the most talked about groups on the team this fall. Holliday says that Damari Simpkins has been consistently his best WR so far this fall. #Utes #CampKyle18— Bill Riley (@espn700bill) August 13, 2018 This is great to see with Simpkins. He’s been talking a big game, saying he’s the...

Preseason Opponent Preview: Washington’s Defense

In what is likely to be one of Utah’s biggest games of 2018, the Washington Huskies kick-off conference play at Rice-Eccles Stadium on September 15 and bring with them one of the most highly regarded defenses in all of college football entering the season. Replacing PAC-12 defensive player of the year, Vita Vea is no easy task and one that would be cause for concern for most other PAC-12 teams. Thankfully for Chris Petersen and company, Washington isn’t most other PAC-12 teams. Sophomore Levi Onwuzurike steps-up to a starting role at defensive tackle in 2018 after seeing limited...

So you’re starting a true freshman quarterback, here’s what to expect

So you’re starting a true freshman quarterback, here’s what to expect

Five teams in the Pac-12 South (all but the Arizona State Sun Devils) took a quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class. With the new NCAA redshirt rule allowing players to appear in up to four games and still redshirt, we could see five teams in the Pac-12 South trot out true freshman quarterbacks at some point during the season. Three of those teams, the UCLA Bruins (Dorian Thompson-Robinson), USC Trojans (JT Daniels), and Utah Utes (Jack Tuttle), brought in four- or five-star recruits at the position. With the Arizona Wildcats (Khalil Tate), Colorado Buffaloes (Steven Montez), and Utah...

Current odds on Utah making the College Football Playoff

Current odds on Utah making the College Football Playoff

The Bovada has put out some odds for teams to make the CFP, and they just released their most recent odds a couple of days ago. The young, but experienced Utah team I’d think have pretty solid odds to make it, not Washington, Stanford or USC odds, but solid odds by the odds makers in the desert. Well, they have some pretty long odds, and from the initial odds in January to the ones a few days ago, they actually got worse. They went from 100/1 to 200/1, and since then they’ve pulled in a great recruiting class, and have most of the team back for this coming season. Of course, this is...
