Utah football picks up 2nd 2019 commitment this week

Utah football picks up 2nd 2019 commitment this week

Well, it seems that the Utes maybe getting a bit of momentum in the recruiting game by picking up their 2nd commitment of the week. The Utes are sticking with the offensive line with this commitment, just like the 1st with the verbal commitment of 6-7 300 pound Luke Felix-Fualao out of Mater Dei High School in San Diego. The three star rated recruit had offers from fellow Pac-12 schools Oregon State, Arizona State, Colorado, and Washington State. 100% Committed to the University of Utah!! Thank you everybody!! @Utah_Football @UtahCoachWhitt @FWhittinghamJr @coachjharding @ConquestCQ...

NCAA Changes Redshirt Rule

NCAA Changes Redshirt Rule

It has been hinted at and seemed possible for months maybe even years, but the NCAA finally changed the redshirt rule for college football, now allowing players to appear in up to four games while still being able to redshirt. Before we dive into what this means, let me just say this is a phenomenal change. The NCAA has not always done right by student athletes, but they knocked it out of the park here. This was a rule players, coaches, and fans all wanted. You can read more about it here. So, what does this rule change mean? Well, it will help incoming freshmen with their development...

Utah football picks up first commitment of 2019 class

Utah is off to a good start with their 2019 class with the committment of Marist Talavou, a 6-3 316 pound offensive guard out of St John Bosco High School in California. Talavou is rated as a three star guard from 247sports.com COMMITTED to The University of Utah! Go Utes!! ⚪️ #VikasLegacy pic.twitter.com/bAEYwZKwwo— Marist Talavou (@MaristTalavou68) June 11, 2018 Talavou has offers from some other big name programs, suchs as ASU, Oklahoma and Oregon. I’d expect him to get some more offers as we get closer to signing day, and he is one the Utes will have to hold onto. St John...

WR Tyquez Hampton to transfer out of program

WR Tyquez Hampton to transfer out of program

The Utes lost a talented wide receiver with Tyquez Hampton announced on Twitter today that he has been granted his release from the program to transfer out. I Appreciate the university and everything they have done for me, but my journey will begin elsewhere #FoE pic.twitter.com/xWumI1qwsZ— Tyquez Hampton (@GeneralHampton_) June 11, 2018 Hampton came on campus a year ago as a highly recruited wide out, and was committed to Washington State for a long time, but flipped to Utah on signing day. Hampton showed a lot of potential during his first spring practice a year ago, and I was...

Utah Season Preview (from Bill C)

Utah Season Preview (from Bill C)

SBNation’s resident advanced stats guru Bill Connelly (Bill C) releases annual previews for every team, and his preview for the Utah Utes is quite positive. You can read it here. Let’s dig in a bit and try to see what we can learn. I am not an advanced stats guy (don’t really understand it), and I recognize that the metrics often favored by its proprietors often do not favor the Utes. Utah’s defense for example creates a lot of havoc plays (sacks, tackles for loss) and forces a lot of turnovers. Advanced stats assume that turnovers are largely random chance due to luck (this article...

Predicting the win o/u from Vegas for the Utah football team

Predicting the win o/u from Vegas for the Utah football team

Vegas has started releasing win totals for some programs around the country, including some in the Pac-12, but I’m yet to really see one for Utah, at least from the Bovada. So, I’m going to try and get ahead of Vegas on this one and predict what they’re going to put down for the Utes. Weber State: WNIU: WWashington: L (Their win total is set at 10.5)Washington State: W (Their win total is set at 6.5)Stanford: L (Win total set at 8)Arizona: WUSC: L (Win total set at 8.5)UCLA: W (Win total set at 5)ASU: WOregon: L (Win total set at 8.5)Colorado: WBYU: W I have them puting Utah at 8 with...

Pac-12 rules 5-7 football teams ineligible for bowl games

Pac-12 rules 5-7 football teams ineligible for bowl games

The Pac-12 has decided that if you only win five games in a season, you will not be going to a bowl game, no matter what. Currently, there is a rule that will allow a 5-7 team to go bowling if there are not enough eligible teams, and you have a qualifying APR. With the number of bowl games, this has become more common over the last couple of seasons. The Utes were actually looking at such a possiblity themselves in 2013 when they were 5-7, but just barely enough teams made it. I find this an interesting decision, because it could potentially hurt the conference revenue wise, since a 5-7...

Coach Larry Krystowiak says Kyle Kuzma’s Rookie Year was the “Perfect Storm”

Coach Larry Krystowiak says Kyle Kuzma’s Rookie Year was the “Perfect Storm”

It’s 2:36 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. I just got home from church and running errands. I’m watching some movie called ‘How to be Single,’ starring Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann. Don’t ask me why I was watching a movie about four women navigating the single life of New York City. I turned on my TV and that’s what was on. I think the movie had just begun, and it was on the part where Rebel Wilson’s character, Robin, woke up to some random guy in the kitchen cooking breakfast. She picked up the knife and almost stabbed him because she didn’t know who he was....

Utah basketball lands a 4-star guard

Utah basketball lands a 4-star guard

In poker terms, the Utah basketball coaching staff just got their “full house” with this most recent addition to the 2018 recruiting class. The Utes have received a commitment from Both Gach, a 4-star rated combo guard / wing out of Arizona. The Utes pulled him in over Texas Tech and San Diego State. As you see below he rounds out one heck of a freshman class, and that doesn’t include some JC talent that Coach K is bringing onto campus. GO UTES‼️ ⚪️ pic.twitter.com/eKtx4nVEws— Both Gach (@TutBoth) June 1, 2018 At 6-feet 7-inches, the Utes have them a long guy that they...

Utah hires their new Athletic Director

Utah hires their new Athletic Director

The same day that they had a fairwell for Dr. Chris Hill as the Utah AD of 31 years went off into retirement, the Utah Athletic Department named HIll’s successor, Mark Harlan. Harlan comes from the University of South Florida, where the school just signed him to an extension back in April. He had a nice track record in the American Athletic conference, which no doubt helped to catch the eye of Utah administrators. From the official release, here’s a bit more on his time at USF: During Harlan’s tenure at USF, the Bulls won 12 American Athletic Conference championships and nine...

Five Utah football kick off times and TV announced

Five Utah football kick off times and TV announced

Ok fans, you can now start planning for your tailgates and house parties as we now know when Utah will be kicking off in 2018 for five games, and which channel they will be on. First up, the opener against Weber State will kick off at 6pm on Pac-12 Network on Thursday, August 30th at Rice-Eccles Stadium. I love Utah’s tradition of opening the season on Thursday, it gets the season started a bit sooner, and then we can really enjoy all of Saturday to watch games without being stressed out over a Utah game. Game No. 2 against NIU will kick off at 5:30, on the road, and it will be broadcast...

Rating the Starting Pac-12 Running Backs for 2018

Rating the Starting Pac-12 Running Backs for 2018

Shane took several looks at the starting quarterbacks in the Pac-12 in 2018 and where Tyler Huntley stacks up. Now, let’s look at his companion in the backfield, running back Zack Moss. The Pac-12 is loaded at running back this year, with the Doak Walker winner returning in addition to three other backs who topped 1,000 yards last season. 1. Bryce Love - Stanford Cardinal This one is a pretty easy call. Love is the best running back in the country, but when he started the season, he had huge shoes to fill with the departure of Christian McCaffrey. Boy did he fill those shoes; he rushed...

Utah men’s basketball players work out with the Utah Jazz

Utah men’s basketball players work out with the Utah Jazz

The off season for the Utah Jazz starter a couple of weeks ago, and with the NBA Draft coming up in June they are full steam ahead with working out many draft prospects. The Jazz brought in three players that Utah fans are familar with: Sedrick Barefield, Tyler Rawson and Kenneth Ogbe. I’d imagine Barefield is just going through the circuit to see what feedback he can get from NBA teams as he moves forward with his college career. This is a common practice for players now, as many of them put their name in there for consideration before withdrawing it before the deadline. I think extra...

Utah athletics posts great APR scores

Utah athletics posts great APR scores

The Utah athletic department has done a great job over the years of making sure the “student” part of student-athlete is made a priority. The Utes continue to do great in the classroom, as they posted some great APR scores once again. In the world of college football, APR takes another level of importance, especially if the team is having a bit of a down season on the field. If you score well enough with APR, you could find yourself bowling if you have a 5-7 season, if there are not enough 6-6 teams to fill all the bowl slots. With Utah’s talent coming back, I wouldn’t anticipate...
