Was the Utes’ Season a Success?

Was the Utes’ Season a Success?

We review Utah’s basketball season and decide whether this season should be remembered as a success or a failure. With the announcement on Sunday that the Utes would not be participating in any of the postseason college basketball tournaments, Utah’s season officially came to an end. The Utes finished at 17-14 for the season, going 6-6 in nonconference games, 11-7 in Pac-12 games, and 0-1 in the Pac-12 tournament. The team ended up finishing third in the conference but followed that up by getting curb stomped by Oregon in their first game in the Pac-12 tournament and losing 66-54. The...

Utah Men’s Basketball to miss postseason play

Utah Men’s Basketball to miss postseason play

We all knew the Utes were likely not going to make the NCAA Tournament pretty early on this season, but the fact that they didn’t make the NIT shouldn’t sit well for most Utah fans out there. The program announced on Sunday afternoon, after the NIT picks had went out, that the season had officially come to an end. The 2018-19 Season has come to an end. Utes finish the Season 17-14. Red Rocks Fall to Georgia on the Road

Red Rocks Fall to Georgia on the Road

The Red Rocks gymnastics team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon in Georgia, and though they finished the season keeping their 197.000+ streak alive, it wasn’t enough to edge out the Bulldogs who claimed victory, 197.450 to 197.525. As the visiting squad, the Utes kicked things off on the bars, netting a 49.325, thanks to a pair of 9.900’s from MaKenna Merrell-Giles and MyKyla Skinner. In all, Utah had clean dismounts throughout, but most girls struggled to get completely vertical with their handstands. Utah second rotation was particularly rough, scoring a 49.325 on...

Red Rocks Regular Season Concludes Against Georgia

Red Rocks Regular Season Concludes Against Georgia

Though the Utah gymnastics team has bid farewell to the Huntsman Center this season, the sixth ranked Red Rocks still have on final competition to cross off their calendar before the PAC-12 invades West Valley for the conference championship; that team is none other than the Georgia Bulldogs. Historically speaking, Georgia has been one of Utah’s fiercest rivals, holding a two-win advantage (26-28-1) over the Utes. While their dominating ways have slowed considerably since former coach, Suzanne Yoculan, retired in 2009, the Bulldogs still have an incredible home gym advantage, with the...

Ducks Decimate Utes in the Desert

Ducks Decimate Utes in the Desert

After fighting for a first round bye in their final regular season game, Utah wasted their opportunity to capitalize on their success, dropping their first game to the sixth seeded Oregon Ducks, 66-54. Utah’s postseason dreams now seem more dead than a rainbow trout floating in the Great Salt Lake. Offense: C- As a unit, the Utes only mustered 34% from the floor on 53 attempted shots and a measly 8.7% from deep. Thankfully, Utah was able to find 16 points off free throws to pad the final score a bit, otherwise the abysmal performance would have look much worse. Donnie Tillman lead...

Utah Takes on Oregon in the Pac-12 Quarterfinals - Open Game Thread

Utes vs Ducks. Round 2. The last time this game happened, Utah squandered a 14 point lead, turned over the ball 20 times, played an embarrassing 20+ minutes of basketball, and still only lost by six. Oregon and Dana Altman has had Utah’s number for years. Their length, pressing style and athleticism has been Utah’s Achilles heel for years. It looked like the Utes had them figured out early in the Pac-12 season, but then it all came crumbling down. Now, for the Utes, the only way into the NCAA Tournament is to win the Pac-12 title this weekend. Shoot, the NIT doesn’t look super...

Utah Men’s Basketball Team Pulls in Postseason Pac-12 Honors

Utah Men’s Basketball Team Pulls in Postseason Pac-12 Honors

The Utes were picked 8th in the preseason poll in the Pac-12 by the media, which you may have heard over the last couple of weeks. Well, the Utes finished with the 3-seed and a first round bye after Coach Krystkowiak rallied the troops after a pretty shaky season. Sure, the Pac-12 was down, maybe in a historically bad fashion, but the Utes did what they needed to do to put themselves in a great position going into the Pac-12 tournament. After a solid season in the league, there were several Utah players that got postseason honors from the league. First, senior guard Sedrick Barefield was...

Utah Women’s Basketball Team Had a Successful But Turbulent Season - Build Toward Future

Utah Women’s Basketball Team Had a Successful But Turbulent Season - Build Toward Future

Coach Roberts has this program going in the right direction, and the future is bright. First, there were eight, then there were seven. Injuries have plagued the University of Utah women’s basketball team this season. Because of that, head coach Lynne Roberts has decided to turn down an invitation for the Utes to play in the WNIT. The Utes lost their number two scorer Daneesha Provo to a knee injury and then forward Dre’Una Edwards, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year also suffered a knee injury. The team was also low in numbers due to preseason injuries, redshirt players and a midseason...

Utes Bruise Bruins on Senior Night

Utes Bruise Bruins on Senior Night

Utah clinched a three seed in the PAC-12 tournament in the final regular season game of the season, blowing past UCLA, 81-92. In an ironic contrast to the two teams first meeting of the season, UCLA lead by two in the opening seconds before Utah stole the lead with an early three point jumper from Sedrick Barefield and never looked back, leading as much as 27 at on point. The Runnin’ Utes now turn their attention to the postseason, starting Thursday night in Vegas. Offense: A It was raining threes in the Huntsman Center, as the Utes combined for 17 shots made from deep, with Sedrick...

UCLA vs Utah Open Game Thread

UCLA vs Utah Open Game Thread

It’s pretty easy for the Utes tonight, win and you’re the three seed with a first round bye in next week’s Pac-12 tournament in Vegas. Lose, well, it could be a slide down the standings. It’s senior night against UCLA, and the Utes will be saying goodbye to four seniors, namely Parker Van Dyke and Sedrick Barefield. Those are two guys that have to play well tonight for the Utes to win. Three point shooting was huge in that historic comeback in Southern California, and it will likely be big tonight. The Utes will be without Jayce Johnson again, so the rebounding game will be an...

Utah vs UCLA: It All Comes Down to This

Utah vs UCLA: It All Comes Down to This

In their final game of the season, the Utes have a chance to secure third place in the Pac-12. They just need one more strong showing and they could complete exceed expectations from the start of the sesaon. All right, we made it this far watching Utah basketball this year, we can make it one more game. Especially since this game has more weight than could have ever been expected throughout the season. Utah has a chance to capitalize on one of the worst Pac-12 seasons in memory and snag a Top-3 finish in conference play. For a team picked to finish eighth before the season even began,...

Runnin’ Utes Roll USC at Home

Runnin’ Utes Roll USC at Home

Utah advanced to 16-13 on the season after a dominating 74-83 win over the USC Trojans at home, aiding them in their quest for a first round bye in the upcoming PAC-12 tournament. We grade the night’s performance below. Offense: A The Runnin’ Utes were aggressive from the start, with Both Gach and Donnie Tillman making their way through the lane for monster dunks early on. In the end, only three of the eight players to hit the court finished under 10 points, with Parker Van Dyke leading all scorers with 20 points (including six for nine from three point range), followed by 19 from...

USC at Utah Open Game Thread

USC at Utah Open Game Thread

We’re coming down the home stretch with the final two games of the regular season for the Utes being this week at home. For the Utes, sweep UCLA and USC and get a bye in the conference tournament. Split and things get a bit dicey. Get swept and prepare to play staring next Wednesday. The Utes have wins over both LA schools already, and seem to be healthy with Timmy Allen back. What Utah needs to do, especially starting tonight against USC, is avoid the long droughts. Against CU there were multiple five minute droughts, the Utes can’t do that again. Utah also needs the three ball to...

Ranking Utah’s Games by Difficulty in 2019 (Spring Edition)

Spring football started this week, so let’s take a quick look at Utah’s 2019 schedule and rank the games by difficulty. This is going to be a shallow dive into each team. We will take a deeper dive over the summer after we get a feel for how teams look in spring camp. There are a lot of question marks for teams in the Pac-12, and we should get a better feel for where teams are at after spring camp. 12. Idaho State Bengals The Bengals finished 6-5 last year (5-3 in the Big Sky). While there are FCS teams that upset FBS teams, it is rare against Power Five teams. Utah could get caught...

Utah vs USC Game Preview: Nobody Knows Anything Anymore!

Utah vs USC Game Preview: Nobody Knows Anything Anymore!

This is it for the Utes. We’re in the final week of the season, and there’s still an incredible amount of uncertainty about how this season will actually look for Utah after the fact. It seems like a great miracle that Utah has won nine conference games already. At the same time, it will feel like a major disappointment now if Utah doesn’t win any more games and finishes stuck in the middle of the conference. The constant changing in expectations has taken us to the point where it’s unclear whether this season should be thought of with mild contentment or with mild disappointment....
