Cowboys winners and losers after the 2018 OTAs and minicamp

Cowboys winners and losers after the 2018 OTAs and minicamp

A totally unscientific study of who helped themselves and who took a step back. It was mostly just a bunch of drills and reps wearing no football equipment except helmets, but the OTAs and minicamp for the Dallas Cowboys still gave us some hints at where things are going. The team has made the first tentative steps in shaping the 53-man roster. The real work starts next month when training camp convenes in Oxnard, but here are a few random observations about who gained some ground and who slipped. Blake Jarwin was the tight end getting the most positive press. With Jason Witten out of the...

Cowboys news: Why Cowboys feel good about their receiving corps

Cowboys news: Why Cowboys feel good about their receiving corps

And who will be the next Ring of Honor member? Jerry Jones feeling better and better about Dak Prescott, receiving corps – Charean Williams, ProFootballTalkPer Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Jones said he wakes up every day feeling “better and better” about Prescott. Here’s why: Jones, though, believes that the biggest addition is new receivers coach Sanjay Lal. Receiver Cole Beasley praised Lal last week, saying “it just feels like this is the first time I’m being taught how to actually run routes instead of just naturally doing them.” “If you do right, Dak...

Cowboys DT Jihad Ward is kind of a Rod Marinelli special

Cowboys DT Jihad Ward is kind of a Rod Marinelli special

Rod Marinelli has definitely delivered on one particular thing during his time in Dallas. Rod Marinelli is often regarded as a whisperer of sorts when it comes to the defensive line. This holds some water when you look at his time in Dallas, especially when you consider the season that DeMarcus Lawrence had in 2017. But Marinelli doesn’t just work his magic with high draft picks like Lawrence. If there’s one thing Rod has been consistent at, it’s getting legitimate production out of castoff or forgotten defensive linemen. Think about it. Guys like George Selvie, Jeremy Mincey, and...

Don’t let the David Irving suspension fool you, Jason Garrett has created a great culture in Dallas

Don’t let the David Irving suspension fool you, Jason Garrett has created a great culture in Dallas

He hasn’t made it easy for them, but the team is doing everything right in dealing with David Irving. Full disclosure - I’m a big fan of David Irving. After being poached from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad in 2015, he only played in 199 snaps on the year (18.84%). He flashed some good play, including a blocked field goal against the Seattle Seahawks, but he was still a forgotten piece to the Cowboys defensive line. Entering his second season, we wrote a piece about him taking a big step forward. When your defensive line group finally breaks the seal on showing the world that...

Which Dallas Cowboys would make your all-time 53 man roster?

Which Dallas Cowboys would make your all-time 53 man roster?

The Cowboys have a rich history of all-time great players, which ones would make your cut to 53? Wearing the star in this league has meaning and many legendary men have left lasting legacies in the annals of time with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have accomplished quite a bit as an organization reaching the pinnacle five times while having 21 men in their Ring of Honor and 20+ in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So, we ask the question, if building the All-Time 53-man roster out of any Cowboys alum to ever play, who would make your cut? We encourage you to consider everyone including...

Report: Gil Brandt, Jimmy Johnson could be next in line for Ring of Honor honors

Report: Gil Brandt, Jimmy Johnson could be next in line for Ring of Honor honors

Executives and coaches before players in Ring of Honor line. The Cowboys might dip into their past for new Ring of Honor candidates, but it looks like it won’t be players up for the honor. According to a report from Jean-Jacques Taylor, a source with the Cowboys says the next person in line for a spot in the Ring of Honor is former vice president of player personnel Gil Brandt. He worked for the Cowboys from 1960 to 1988 and is a legend in the scouting area of professional football. He, along with general manager Tex Schramm and head coach Tom Landry, created the Dallas Cowboys and they...

Are these Colorado kids the next stars at the wide receiver and cornerback position for the Cowboys?

Are these Colorado kids the next stars at the wide receiver and cornerback position for the Cowboys?

Keep an eye on the battle going on between these two young players. Throughout the years, every great Cowboys receiver had a star cornerback lining up across from him on the practice field. Drew Pearson and Everson Walls. Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders. And Dez Bryant and Morris...well, never mind on that one. One of these days, the Cowboys will once again have a new star wide receiver and a new star cornerback fighting it out in practice, competing hard, and making each other better. But is it possible that day is a lot closer than we think? Last season, the team modernized their...

Cowboys news: Dak Prescott is ready to “surprise a lot of people”

Your Monday morning Dallas Cowboys news. Dak Prescott: Cowboys will be an exciting team and surprise a lot of people – Michael Smith, ProFootballTalkPrescott may not have a WR1, but he's excited about the prospects for the offense in Dallas this season. Prescott said on Saturday that despite the departures of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, who were first and second in catches on the Cowboys last year, he expects to put on a show in 2018. “We’re going to be an exciting team this year,” Prescott said on Showtime. “A lot of new faces. I think you’re going to find we have a lot of...

Cowboys insiders name three early favorite receiving targets for QB Dak Prescott

Cowboys insiders name three early favorite receiving targets for QB Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott’s mission is to create a more efficient passing offense, three guys have stood out thus far. The Cowboys passing game has been a popular discussion topic this offseason but such is the case when one area receives such a huge face lift. Only four players at both tight end and receiver can say they have caught a pass in the regular season from Dak Prescott. Those lucky few are Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Geoff Swaim, and Noah Brown. Four pass catchers out of the 20 on the roster? To say this roster has seen some turnover would be an “understatement of the year”...

Dallas Cowboys coaching spotlight: Assistant offensive line coach Marc Colombo

Dallas Cowboys coaching spotlight: Assistant offensive line coach Marc Colombo

He was a stud lineman for the Cowboys, and now he’s coaching the next stud linemen in Dallas. After the 2017 season ended, Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett decided to make some wholesale changes to the structure of the Dallas Cowboys to avoid another disappointment, if 9-7 can really be called a disappointment. While offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli both remained with the team, much of the staff around them has changed. This series is meant to profile each coach, including the ones who stayed, and analyze how their presence will contribute to the...

Three Cowboys who will make their first Pro Bowl in 2018

Three Cowboys who will make their first Pro Bowl in 2018

With more snaps and a clearer opportunity to make their names known, these three Cowboys could be in for career seasons in 2018. The 2018 season will bring lots of surprises to the Dallas Cowboys. While the team has been going through a youth rebuild in the past few years, it feels right now, more than ever, that this franchise is as different as it has been in over a decade. Tony Romo, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant are no longer on this team. Even 10-year vet Orlando Scandrick is not on this roster anymore. The Cowboys in 2018 are going to be different, vastly different. With the offseason...

Tradition of suspensions seem to counter Jason Garrett’s “right kind of guy” mantra

Tradition of suspensions seem to counter Jason Garrett’s “right kind of guy” mantra

Five years in a row is not coincidence, Jason Garrett must address it. Jason Garrett is the very well-intentioned head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He loves his players, fellow coaches, and the game of football. There’s no question that he wants everyone to excel and that he’s willing to do everything within his power for that to happen. Garrett is entering his eighth season as the leader of America’s Team. Eight years is a long time. When you’ve done something for eight years, you tend to have a legacy, something to show for your work. Eight years is how long doctors go to school,...

Under Sanjay Lal’s direction, the Cowboys Cole Beasley could see a contract extension in his future

Could Beasley have a breakout season in 2018? The Dallas Cowboys are having open auditions for the role of the team’s number one wide receiver. Okay, so maybe it’s not open as it’s limited to a selected group of players, but as it stands now - the role of Dak Prescott’s favorite target is still up for grabs. With Dez Bryant gone and now playing for the [enter new team here when it finally happens], Brice Butler moving out to the desert, and Ryan Switzer heading to the California bay to play for the Oakland Raiders - the wideout group has been remodeled. Free agents Allen Hurns and...
