Cowboys' defense wasting golden opportunity to develop nose for takeaways

Cowboys' defense wasting golden opportunity to develop nose for takeaways

ARLINGTON -- Takeaways are a mindset in football, a defensive mentality. The Cowboys haven't developed that mentality this summer -- and they are running out of time. The Cowboys now have three preseason games in the books but only one turnover to show for the 84 minutes their defense has spent on the field. They have defended against 96 passes and 70 rushes in games this month but have only a single fumble recovery by corner Duke Thomas to show for their ballhawkishness.Or lack thereof.August is an opportune time to develop that mentality. With the parade of different quarterbacks and running...

Cowboys CB Jourdan Lewis (hamstring) hopeful he can return next week

ARLINGTON -- Rookie CB Jourdan Lewis said it's been "extremely hard" to watch from the sidelines as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Lewis, who hasn't appeared in a preseason game, missed most of training camp practice in California while rehabbing. The third-round pick doesn't know when he'll be able to return but is hopeful it will be next week."I'm praying for next week," said Lewis. "Just rehabbing it, just running, simple little things. Just trying to get back in the fold of things."

Locker room reaction: Teammates excited for future after Jaylon Smith 'looked like he hadn't missed a step'

Locker room reaction: Teammates excited for future after Jaylon Smith 'looked like he hadn't missed a step'

After suffering a gruesome injury in his final collegiate game, Jaylon Smith returned to the field for his first NFL action, securing one drive-ending tackle followed by his signature swipe celebration in 12 plays on the field. Here is what his teammate thought of his first game action:Running back Alfred Morris: I was super excited. I've been praying a lot for him and just rooting a lot for him so to see him out there and coming from where he came from, that's awesome. I'm one of his biggest fans. And he did his little signature swipe, it was good to see. I know he can just keep going up...

It's a blessing: Cowboys' Smith brothers play on the same team for first time ever

While it's linebacker Jaylon Smith who is understandably getting most of the attention these days, he's not the only one in the family impressing the Cowboys. Running back Rod Smith rushed seven times for 53 yards Saturday, has turned in a strong camp and added to Dallas' reasons for feeling good about its depth at the position.Jaylon played in his first game Saturday after suffering a severe knee injury in his final college game.Jaylon and Rod walked into Dallas' locker room together, laughing and re-living moments from the game. They play on opposite sides of the ball, but it was still the...

Jason Witten sees some of a young Tony Romo in Cooper Rush

ARLINGTON -- Cooper Rush acknowledged after Saturday night's preseason game that he's not used to the number of reporters who were swarming him in the Cowboys' AT&T Stadium locker room.Rush stays away from social media. He tries to avoid reading stories about himself."I just want to keep showing them that I can play for this team and help this team out any way I can," Rush said. "That's the goal, to make this roster."It's going to be difficult for him to continue ignoring the hype if he keeps playing like he has through three preseason games.Rush has been so good that Jason Witten agreed when...

Stephen Jones 'real pleased' with Cooper Rush, but is he ready to consider him for backup QB job?

ARLINGTON - Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said he's eager to see even more of quarterback Cooper Rush after a stellar start to the preseason but isn't prepared to hand him the backup quarterback job.At least not yet.Rush has outperformed Cowboys backup quarterback Kellen Moore through three preseason games. On Saturday night against the Colts, Rush was near perfect.Rush completed 8-of-9 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns against Indianapolis to lead the Cowboys to a 24-19 win.For the preseason, Rush has completed 26-of-38 passes for 283 yards, four touchdowns and he has...

Jerry Jones finally responds to Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension

ARLINGTON - Jerry Jones continues to clam up when it comes to commenting on the six-game suspension of star running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys owner will almost always say something about anything, but is biding his time before opening up about the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell's decision. Earlier this month, Jones had no problem publicly predicting Elliott would not be suspended, but has been guarded since the discipline was issued."I don't have anything to say about anything with the commissioner or with anything to do with Zeke at this particular time," Jones said following...

Cowboys' win showed us what they really look like without Zeke

Cowboys' win showed us what they really look like without Zeke

ARLINGTON -- Two rookies burst onto the scene in 2016, led the Cowboys to 11 straight victories and the best record in the NFC and kept their names not only in the Rookie of the Year but MVP discussion all season.Dallas fans saw the future, and it was good. Now we're trying to figure out the next future -- the more immediate but temporary one that includes Dak Prescott, presumably in a more prominent role, but is without Ezekiel Elliott for as many as six games. And the Cowboys' early returns Saturday night in the first home pre-season test were really, really good.Dallas could have used...

How worried should Cowboys fans be about their quarterbacks?

How worried should Cowboys fans be about their quarterbacks?

ARLINGTON -- Dak Prescott was sharp, decisive and in complete control of the Cowboys offense Saturday evening.Kellen Moore wasn't.If there's any doubt about where you fall on the glass half empty or half full debate as a Cowboys fan, this should settle it. Did you come out of the team's 24-19 win over Indianapolis ecstatic about what you saw from the starting quarterback in his preseason debut, or did your gnawing concerns about Moore's ability to back him up push that to the background? Are you optimistic for what this season holds with Prescott in charge of the offense or scared to death of...

5 thoughts on Cowboys-Colts: Life without Zeke; is Kellen Moore in danger of losing backup job?

5 thoughts on Cowboys-Colts: Life without Zeke; is Kellen Moore in danger of losing backup job?

ARLINGTON - Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant looked to be in mid-season form, Jaylon Smith appears ready to contribute and Kellen Moore did not quiet the critics. Here are my five thoughts on the Cowboys' third preseason game, a 24-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts.1-Ezekiel Elliott didn't play, but the first-team offense looked a lot like last year's group on the first two series. Dak Prescott moved the ball well through the air. Darren McFadden and the run game had success on the ground. McFadden's redzone fumble was costly and something that can't happen on Sundays, but he did run well behind...

Ezekiel Elliott only Cowboys' regular not to appear vs. Colts; Tyron Smith limited to 7 plays

Ezekiel Elliott only Cowboys' regular not to appear vs. Colts; Tyron Smith limited to 7 plays

ARLINGTON -- For the first time this preseason, the Cowboys on Saturday night allowed almost all of their offensive starters to take the field. That meant left tackle Tyron Smith, receivers Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley, tight end Jason Witten and, of course, quarterback Dak Prescott were among those making their preseason debuts at AT&T Stadium.Running back Ezekiel Elliott was the only regular who did not appear against the Indianapolis Colts in Dallas's third preseason game.Darren McFadden started in his place and the combination of Prescott, Bryant, Witten and McFadden played Dallas' opening...

Cowboys CB Orlando Scandrick not diagnosed with concussion, but doesn't re-enter game vs. Colts

ARLINGTON -- Cornerback Orlando Scandrick underwent a cognitive evaluation late in the second quarter. But he was not diagnosed with a concussion, according to the Cowboys radio broadcast. He didn't re-enter the game, however, and was seen laughing on the sidelines. He had a pass breakup and tackle for loss earlier in the first half, building off a strong training camp. What's next: The Cowboys returned home Friday from their training camp base in Southern California. Camp resumes Monday at Ford Center at The Star, the first of six practices open to fans who have tickets. An opening ceremony...

Babe Laufenberg: Why I like Kellen Moore as Cowboys' backup quarterback

Former Cowboys Babe Laufenberg and Daryl (Moose) Johnston discussed Kellen Moore on the CBS Channel 11 broadcast on Saturday night.Moore, the Cowboys No. 2 quarterback, continued to struggle in relief of Dak Prescott. Many Cowboys fans were enraged on Twitter, some even calling for Dallas to sign Colin Kaepernick. But Laufenberg says not to give up on Moore. He went on a lengthy diatribe about it:"I think he can handle things," Laufenberg said. "He doesn't get rattled. He's a winner. If you're waiting for him to be 6-4, 230, that's not going to happen. There are 10 teams that don't like their...

Sherrington's a la carte: Would Cowboys fans be outraged over Zeke suspension if he were an Eagle?

Sherrington's a la carte: Would Cowboys fans be outraged over Zeke suspension if he were an Eagle?

Justice is often tougher to grasp than Ezekiel Elliott in open field, as his case reminds. Just the same, between you and me, do you think Cowboys fans would be so outraged over "injustice" of his six-game suspension if he were an Eagle? ... Wisest words in Elliott case come from his teammate, Jason Witten, whose foundation supports domestic violence victims. Witten wraps his arms around teammate without enabling him, prefacing his support by saying, "Look, there's no place for a man to put his hand on a woman." ... Saturday's Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor prediction: Mayweather in three....
