Angels squeak out a victory in DC and split the series against the Nationals thanks to Kole Calhoun heroics

Calhoun’s 2 run homer was the key to the game Angels 3 Nationals 2 This game started out ugly. In typical Ricky Nolasco fashion, it took him 31 pitches to get out of the first inning in which he gave up yet another home run. In this case, it was a 2-run shot that would ultimately prove to be the only runs the Nats would score all day. Tanner Roark was dealing, and a Luis Valbuena double would be the ONLY hit the Angels would manage over the first 4 innings as this game was cruising right along. Nolasco, who escaped a bases loaded jam in the 4th was thankful to Luis Valbuena (again),...

HumpLinks: Skaggs brilliant. Kendrick brillianter.

HumpLinks: Skaggs brilliant. Kendrick brillianter.

Tyler Skaggs, in just his 3rd game back, showed us the kind of stability he can bring to the rotation. 5 innings pitched and only 2 earned runs allowed. His ERA is 2.93 since coming back. How bout them symmetrical apples? Back in 2014 Howie Kendrick and Andrew Heaney passed each other on the 5 freeway and the Angels and Dodgers swapped players. Three years later those two players arrived together in Washington, DC. Kendrick just 3 weeks after being traded, and Heaney just hours after going through rehab. Kendrick showed up and produced. Heaney showed up and watched. Nats win, 3-1. But's...

If someone had to hit two HRs & lead Nats to 3-1 win over Angels, I’m glad it was Howie Kendrick

If someone had to hit two HRs & lead Nats to 3-1 win over Angels, I’m glad it was Howie Kendrick

A 7-game winning streak would have been rad, but Howie said “nah”. Angels 1 Nationals 3 Today’s game against the Nationals was the first of two games in D.C., before the Angels head on over to Baltimore for a series against the Orioles. What a nice little east coast jaunt for the fellas, eh? Too bad the Angels got smacked around by none other than Howie Kendrick, leading to the end of their 6-game winning streak and a showing us a hell of a wimpy way to follow up this past weekend’s hype-filled, Wild Card weekend in Seattle. Seriously, this is about as much of a let-down game as...

Brennon Lund is the best Angels prospect you’ve never heard of

Brennon Lund is the best Angels prospect you’ve never heard of

Lund has been tearing up the minors since he was drafted in 2016 Have you heard of Brennon Lund? Perhaps you read Jeff Joiner’s interview back about 3 weeks ago? Also check out this short audio interview from just a few days ago. Lund burst into the Angels farm system last June by hitting .529 in his first 19 plate appearances with a .619 OBP and 5 stolen bases. He came into the minors and said - I am here and ready to prove myself - and that he has done. Lund wasn’t even drafted until the 11th round of the 2016 draft and Eppler and crew considered that a steal. Lund was drafted...

Series Preview: Angels @ Nationals (Quickie in DC)

Series Preview: Angels @ Nationals (Quickie in DC)

The Angels head to our Nation’s Capital for a quickie against a Harper-less Nationals The Angels hold on to a wild card spot by the slimmest of margins with 5 teams within 2.5 games of taking their spot. It’s a tight race for sure and with 43 game left, every win matters. Even a split here would be okay - just like the Angels did back in July at the Big A. Harper’s 4 for 4 showing really was key to that win, and this time the Angels play the Nationals with Harper on the DL. The Nationals are still a very formidable team without Harper in the lineup. Good ole Howie Kendrick,...

The Mariners’ attempt to “piggyback” two starters didn’t go over so well this weekend, allowing Angels to dominate series

The Mariners’ attempt to “piggyback” two starters didn’t go over so well this weekend, allowing Angels to dominate series

Here’s a little bit behind Seattle’s interesting pitching strategy during the Angels-Mariners 4-game set. The Angels did good in their last four games, awakening the Mariners yet again to the Team of Destiny with a sweep on Edgar Martinez weekend in front of four sold-out crowds at Safeco Field. And it was glorious. But all the four games were close, and it could have been a disaster, had it not been for the gift of Seattle’s starting pitching stratagem. Seattle’s rotation has been beaten and battered, and because of this they’ve been bad. James Paxton put up 4.1 fWAR this...

TuesdoLinks: Angels banging on East Coast door.

TuesdoLinks: Angels banging on East Coast door.

The Angels have a cool set of series just a few miles apart, in the DC Metro area. That's east coast central, where the Halos can make some noise. The Angels are playing wickedly hot baseball right now, firing on many cylinders. It shows in the results. It shows in the standings. It doesn't always show in the coverage, but it is showing more than it was. It is only just starting to show in the media attention. As Josh elaborated yesterday, this attention is still full of holes and mistakes. They are even getting listed as a game to watch later in the week (scroll down to the 18th). Except...

Stupidity from MLB & L.A. Times are latest examples of why Angels fans have chip on their shoulders

Stupidity from MLB & L.A. Times are latest examples of why Angels fans have chip on their shoulders

The L.A. Times thinks a team in playoff race doesn’t need a beat writer, and MLB Channel talks Wild Card race while totally forgetting about the Halos. Such is the life of an Angels fan. If there’s one commonly-shared characteristic among the Angels fan community that I find myself struggling with on a regular basis, it’s probably the inferiority complex. This inferiority complex is inside scores of the Halos’ most hardcore acolytes, usually showing itself in a handful of ways, both in real life and online. Sometimes, it’s bemoaning the amount of Yankees/Red Sox/etc fans that show...

Kaleb Cowart making progress at the plate

Kaleb Cowart making progress at the plate

The 25-year-old has made real changes to his offensive game. In 2010, the Angels spent their first-round draft pick on a talented Georgia-high school product by the name of Kaleb Cowart. A switch-hitting third baseman, Cowart performed as expected in the lower levels of the minor leagues, but his production fell off dramatically after a promotion to Double-A in 2013. After two rough years at that level, Cowart was demoted back down to High-A Inland Empire, which is when he altered his swing and improved his results. And when a vacancy at the hot corner opened in Triple-A Salt Lake, the...

Angels Week 19 Rankings - Position Players

Angels Week 19 Rankings - Position Players

The good, the bad, and the meh - Trout, Simmons, and Cron led the way I’ll cover the entire 40 man roster and will split it between position players and pitchers (generally 20 or so guys on each list). Each week the list will change based on the past week’s performance - but also taking into account their performance year to date. Summary The Angels scored the 3rd most runs in the AL last week with 33. Cron, Trout, Simmons, Calhoun, and Maldanado all had great weeks and helped pick up the slack for Cowart, Maybin, Valbuena, and Pujols who had a bit of a rougher time. The Angels also...

Angels Week 19 Rankings - Pitchers

The good, the bad, and the meh - Bridwell keeps rolling I’ll cover the entire 40 man roster and will split it between position players and pitchers (generally 20 or so guys on each list). Each week the list will change based on the past week’s performance - but also taking into account their performance year to date. Summary The Angels pitching staff led the American League last week with a 2.00 ERA. It was some pretty stellar pitching all around with 6 Angels pitchers having a WHIP at 1.00 or lower and a BAA of .208 or lower. Not on this list: Matt Shoemaker, 10 day DLLNick...

MondoLinks: Halo fans swept off our feet.

MondoLinks: Halo fans swept off our feet.

The Angels taking the 4-game uber-broom to Seattle flips places with the Mariners for the Wild Card spot. And just like that, LAA has overcome a maelstrom of peril to restore relevance. Isn't Baseball great? Weekends such as this are the moments of brilliant exhilaration that come amidst those long stretches of insufferable failure. A lot of comments here going into the weekend were hopeful for a split, and with a 4-2 win yesterday, they actually took all 4. There are a lot of games still ahead, a lot of which will be full of more baseball misery. But weekends such as this one prove that...
