WeekEnd HaloLinks: 11 More Shopping Days Til Christmas

WeekEnd HaloLinks: 11 More Shopping Days Til Christmas

Billy Eppler might be waiting for those after-Christmas sales. Again. (For those wondering, this week’s Links cover photos were of those 2018 guys who will no longer be playing under the Halo.) Well, that’s a complete wrap. Back to the silence of Anaheim. I would disagree with this title about “unfinished business”, since there was no material “business” started in the first place. Just a lot of chatter over morning coffee, which ran into lunch, which lasted until dinner, and then broke for the evening. Repeat times 4. We hear that the Angels are engaged, and have multiple...

Angels send Conor Lillis-White to the Cubs because they don’t need any stinkin’ lefties

Angels send Conor Lillis-White to the Cubs because they don’t need any stinkin’ lefties

What is Billy Eppler doing anyway? Back on November 29th, the web-a-sphere was set on fire with the blockbuster trade that sent Tommy La Stella from the Cubs to save the Angels 2019 campaign. Part of that deal was “future considerations” to be sent back to the Cubs. Part of me was hoping that meant Billy Eppler just had to be nice to Theo Epstein at the Winter Meetings and maybe save him a spot in the Starbucks line at Mandalay Bay. But no, apparently that meant the Angels are sending Conor Lillis-White to the Cubs. Who is Conor Lillis-White you might ask (and probably did)? He has...

Thor’sLinks: Rule 5 Day

Thor’sLinks: Rule 5 Day

Now is when all those roster protection decisions come home to roost. We wrap up the Winter Meeting News, where Billy Eppler will soon come home the conquering hero with Forrest Snow, Matt Ramsey, Dustin Garneau, Wilfredo Tovar, Peter Bourjos, Jarrett Parker and Cesar Puello added to Tempe, and Kaleb Cowart dumped moved to Seattle. I15 is being covered with roses and palm fronds as I write this. But the biggie deal from the Winter Meets would be the signing late yesterday of Justin Bour. One-year deal. Think of him as the left-handed version of Albert Pujols at 10 cents on the dollar....

Justin Bour has developed an elite and coveted skill

Justin Bour has developed an elite and coveted skill

The CJ Cron comps are out there. They are also wrong. Justin Bour has what many may consider an underwhelming profile. He slugs about average for a first baseman and he hits about average too. His defense is equally sub-par and he is slow like many other big corner mashers. It is thus unsurprising that many fans saw the news that the Angels will sign Bour to a $2.5M contract and rolled their eyes. The corner infielder does have a career slash line of .260/.344/.466. That is pretty good of course, but his 2018 was a step back. A 119 wRC+ is definitely above average for a 1B in this modern...

Angels to sign Justin Bour

Angels to sign Justin Bour

Day 3 of the Winter Meetings ends with a meh from Billy Eppler Justin Bour has agreed to a deal with the Angels per Jeff Passan. Source: Justin Bour has agreed to a dealing with the Los Angeles Angels, pending a physical.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 13, 2018 Was this who you were expecting? Someone on Reddit even posted the news this morning. Bour is a first baseman, so would look to split time with Albert Pujols which begs the question: What does Pujols do when Bour is at first base? If he is DH’ing, then he takes at bats away from Ohtani - at least when Ohtani comes...

HumpLinks: It’s 3rd and Long

HumpLinks: It’s 3rd and Long

Billy Eppler ain’t talking no field goals. He wants the touchdown. Ok, so Billy Eppler is now on record as stating that he has some good deal in hand, but wants to go with the Big Splash while he has the ball. The football, to be specific. But you know what I like? I like a touchdown AND a field goal. We still have enough time on the clock for AT LEAST 2 scores. So what’s the deal? Are we short on plays in our playbook? Let’s go for it, Billy! What’s the call?...Wait...What?...You called WHAT??? No touchdown. No field goal. No points for you. Get off the field, Billy. Go back to the...

The Angels have gone from going for a touchdown to being “off the football field”, per Billy Eppler

The Angels have gone from going for a touchdown to being “off the football field”, per Billy Eppler

Are you not entertained? Angels general manager Billy Eppler had stated on Monday that he could “kick a field goal if [he] wanted to, but let’s go for a touchdown”, in a statement to team reporters. He’s walking that statement back now, saying that the Angels are “off the football field now”. Eppler claims smaller things are able to be accomplished right now. Here's Billy Eppler's clarification, given with a smile, today:"I'm not going to go there any more. We're off the football field now. There are smaller things we can do right now, and there's a chance to do things that...

Winter Meetings Day 2: Angels Rumors and Notes roundup

I had originally intended to write this post with a title and blank post, because not much has really happened yet. However - there are a few items to update you all on in regards to Angels happenings this week. Angels are going big. But how big? #Angels GM Billy Eppler on the first day of the Winter Meetings and where they’re at on the trade front: “We could kick a field goal right now if we wanted to, but let's go for a touchdown." https://t.co/DM8HkIpMeT— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) December 11, 2018 Are the Angels going Bryce Harper big? TuesdoLinks: The Cowartly Lion

The Biggest Deal of Day 1 was...Kaleb Cowart? 25% of the way through the Big Week of Winter, and the Big News of the day is all about Kaleb Cowart. He’s going to spin a cocoon and emerge as a rotation ace. All up in Seattle. It’s below. You’ll get to it. These be the Winter-Meet-Day-2-HaloLinks: A Little Bit Of Angels News Yet another long overdue duh! moment, Kaleb Cowart (out of options) was put through the waiver wire on his way to be parked back in Salt Lake City. We were wondering what was taking so long? Now we know. Jerry Dipoto was lurking on that wire just waiting to step in...

The offseason news you’ve all been waiting for: Mariners claim infielder Kaleb Cowart off waivers

So you tell me that moves have to be exciting? Former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto, and now Mariners GM, is doing it again. Acquiring previously rostered players on his teams! This time, it’s utility infielder Kaleb Cowart going to the Mariners in a waiver wire claim. #Mariners claim INF/RHP Kaleb Cowart off waivers from Los Angeles-AL. The Velocity gamble: Analyzing the Jose Alvarez / Luis Garcia trade

The Velocity gamble: Analyzing the Jose Alvarez / Luis Garcia trade

Feeling the need for speed On the surface, the swap between Garcia and Alvarez looks bad. After all, Garcia put up a 6.07 ERA with a NEGATIVE WAR in 2018, while Alvarez was arguable the Angels’ best bullpen piece with a 2.71 ERA and 1.4 WAR. Seems a bit lopsided, right? See a fanpost take on this trade here Both pitchers are around the same salary and both are arbitration eligible for two more years. Alvarez is 29 year old while Garcia is 31. Pitch Repertoire Jose Alvarez throws 5 pitches (fastball, curve, slider, changeup, cutter). His fastball tops out around 94 MPH and his velocity...

Contest Results: Predict the Angels coaches who will be looking for new jobs

Contest Results: Predict the Angels coaches who will be looking for new jobs

At the end of October, I posted a contest for you all to decide who gets canned not invited back from the Angels coaching staff. Now that we have the new coaching staff announced, I can reveal who won! First, the contest was who can guess which coaches will be looking for new jobs. Turns out there were 8 of them total (out of 10). So the winner is the person who had the most right out of those 8. We had 135 responses and only 24 people correctly guessed that both Paul Sorrento and Josh Paul would still have jobs. Must be a Paul thing?? So, out of those 24 people, who guessed the most of...
