Thor'sLinks: Ricky done lost that thunder

Thor'sLinks: Ricky done lost that thunder

Nolasco gave up up seven hit. Three of them were devastating. Wins might not be a good metric, but they fuel self-satisfaction. And Nolasco hasn't had a W since Late April and the Halos haven't W'ed in any of those starts, either. You are seeing a whole new Links today. Are you not excited?? Imagine me. I write these things and will probably be the last of us to wake up and get online and see how it looks. In truth, I am still using the old editor and I am not supposed to be. Any day now they will shut down this old editor and I will have to start all over and things will look like funk...

Pssst...tomorrow, Halos Heaven is gonna have a new look. Here’s the lowdown.

Pssst...tomorrow, Halos Heaven is gonna have a new look. Here’s the lowdown.

To celebrate, there is going to be a contest you don’t want to miss. Yo, my Halos Heaven brethren, my sisters and brothers from different mothers, I’ve got some news you’re all going to LOVE. It has to do with changes to the site, and if I’ve learned anything in the untold hours I’ve spent being a regular visitor to dozens of sites out there in the interwebz, it’s that people LOVE when the powers that be go and change stuff. Those types of changes are usually met with nothing but pats on the back, endless kudos and thanks given and a general sense of “I’m so, so glad they...

Ricky Nolasco shocks absolutely nobody by giving up three homers in Angels’ 5-2 loss to Rays

Ricky Nolasco shocks absolutely nobody by giving up three homers in Angels’ 5-2 loss to Rays

Hey, Albert Pujols hit HR #597, though! Angels 2 Rays 5 Ok, so apparently the Rays aren’t the cool bros we thought they were. The Rays are not the cool bros that would hand out some runs here and there, or give up big ol’ meatballs for our Halos hitters to crush; perhaps they got a little tired of getting walloped around Tropicana Field, like we saw in the first two games of this 4-game series, and decided they’d try to stick up for themselves in tonight’s game. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, the fact is Tampa Bay came to play tonight, and save for one Albert Pujols home...

The keys to Cameron Maybin’s recent hot streak

The keys to Cameron Maybin’s recent hot streak

The left fielder has been a different hitter in the leadoff spot. Through May 15, Cameron Maybin was one of the worst hitters in the league, batting .180 with a .549 OPS. But due to Yunel Escobar’s inury and Kole Calhoun’s poor start to the season, Maybin was shifted to the leadoff spot the following day, and his fortunes suddenly changed; he went 5-for-6 that day and hasn’t looked back. In an admittedly tiny sample size of seven games and 36 plate appearances since he began hitting leadoff every day, Maybin is hitting .483/.583/.828. It’s only a week, but it brought his season line...

HumpLinks: Shoe gives Rays fits

HumpLinks: Shoe gives Rays fits

Angels pitching was very strong, led by starter Matt Shoemaker and shutdown relief. Zonkers! The Matt Shoemaker we have all been waiting for showed up against the Rays yesterday. Don't think of it as a fluke. The Rays are actually hitting better so far than the Angels. 7th-best in the AL. He, and a masterful showing by the bullpen, performed a total shut down on Tampa Bay. Cameron Maybin and Mike Trout led off with back-to-back home runs and the Angels won 4-0.  Plus, Trout drew another walk. That makes for 10 games in a row with at least 1 Base on...

Maybin & Trout got the party started, Shoemaker & the ‘pen shut the party down in 4-0 win over Rays

Maybin & Trout got the party started, Shoemaker & the ‘pen shut the party down in 4-0 win over Rays

Angels 4 Rays 0 Yesterday, in our series preview article for this current 4-game tussle in Tampa Bay, we predicted that today’s game would be very fun to watch, at least if you’re an Angels fan. I can confirm; this game WAS extremely fun to watch. The Halos flexed so much firepower and exuded so much swag tonight that you can totally overlook the fact that they were playing a mediocre Rays team; when they’re putting on a clinic like they did today, I would have them beating just about anybody. The game began with the boom of a loud, brooding, Halo red thundercloud; two booms, to be...

MLB draft 2017 player profile: Adam Haseley, OF

MLB draft 2017 player profile: Adam Haseley, OF

A look at a guy who has played his way into the first round of the draft. After a strong spring, Haseley has rocketed up the draft boards into upper-mid first round consideration. He plays outfield and starting pitcher, but his impressive hitting at Virginia leaves scouts without a shadow of a doubt that he is better as an outfielder. Adam Haseley, 21 y/o | 6’2” | 185 | OF | Junior University of Virginia Season Stats (OF): 205 AB, .400/.498/.688, 1.186 OPS, 14 HR, 15 2b, 19 K, 40 BB, 10 SB Season Stats (SP): 11 GS, 3.58 ERA, 65.1 innings, 53 K, 18 BB, .240 BA allowed It’s clear that...

MLB draft 2017: Angels farm depth report - Middle Infield

MLB draft 2017: Angels farm depth report - Middle Infield

Fontana, Fletcher, and Baldoquin - oh my! The MLB draft is about 3 weeks away, so we’ll be taking look at the Angels farm system. Where are they strong? Where are they weak? In this edition, let’s take a look at the corner infielders (and DH). Fortunately, the Angels shouldn’t need to worry about SS for a few more years (at least until 2020) with Andrelton Simmons locked up. Second base in another story though. The pipeline is thin (as per usual), with Nolan Fontana and David Fletcher maybe being the next best things and a few others like Connor Justus and Julio Garcia currently...

Angels Week 7 Rankings - Position Players

Angels Week 7 Rankings - Position Players

The good, the bad, and the meh - Cameron Maybin in tearing it up! I’ll cover the entire 40 man roster and will split it between position players and pitchers (generally 20 or so guys on each list). Each week the list will change based on the past week’s performance - but also taking into account their performance year to date. Summary The Angels offense scored the 2nd most runs in the AL last week with 41 - thanks in large part to their Sunday slug fest, but it was nice to see the offense looking up. Maybin led the charge and was on fire. These rankings were compiled with the help of...

TuesdoLinks: Maybin we got us a left fielder?

TuesdoLinks: Maybin we got us a left fielder?

Cameron Maybin is tearing it up from the leadoff spot, and teams just cannot seem to keep Mike Trout off the bases. On May 16th, for some really odd reason Mike Scioscia moved Cameron Maybin into the leadoff spot. In his career, Maybin has been leadoff 3rd most at 132 games behind batting second (215 games) and batting 7th (173 games). His career BA there is only .254 (5th-best batting slot). His OBP is only .325 (again 5th-best). His SLG is only .370 (still 5th best). And his OPS is .696 (6th best). So with that history, how the hell was Sosh gonna know that moving Maybin back into that...
