Six games to go, and we are still nervous
Photo by John Cordes/Icon Sportswire via Texas is in the driver’s seat, but it doesn’t mean they can’t still careen off the road We are in the final week of the 2023 regular season. Your Texas Rangers are currently sitting at 88-68, 2.5 games up on the 86-71 Houston Astros and 4 games up on the 84-72 Seattle Mariners. Texas is also a game up on the 87-69 Toronto Blue Jays, who are currently in the Wild Card 2 slot. Texas holds the tiebreaker against both the Mariners and the Blue Jays, so if they end the year with the same record as either Toronto or Seattle,...

88-68 - Rangers opt for the long ball to beat Angels 5-1 in opener
Photo by Meg Oliphant/ The Magic Number is 4 The Texas Rangers scored five runs while the Anaheim Angels scored one run. For a quite a while there, it looked like the Rangers were heading for another one of those 1-0 Jon Gray outings where Gray carves up a team — a rarer sight in the second half, anyway — while the offense hangs him out to dry. However, after Angels starter Patrick Sandoval escaped poor command and wiggled out of multiple jams thanks in part to some bad BABIP luck for Texas, the lefty exited with an oblique issue in the top of the 4th. In the 6th,...

Thoughts on a 9-8 Rangers win
Photo by Ron Jenkins/ Rangers 9, Mariners 8 Rangers 9, Mariners 8 A win! And a sweep! Woo hoo!!! An exciting, nerve-wracking win. And not to complain, but it would be nice if Texas could put up a couple of not so exciting wins. The type where there’s a big lead and the big lead is sustained all game. One or two of those early this week would be a good thing. Nathan Eovaldi’s velocity was down all day by about 2.5 mph on his pitches compared to his season average. He was not real sharp, but he managed to strike out six batters in five innings, due in large...
87-68 - Rangers survive to sweep Seattle in The Shed’s finale
Photo by Ron Jenkins/ Be seein’ ya, The Shed Texas Rangers scored nine runs while the Seattle Mariners scored eight runs. *exhale * It didn’t have to be that difficult but the Rangers managed to secure the final outs required to finish off a sweep of the Mariners to elevate themselves to a 2.5 game lead in the American League West. The Rangers struck first on a lead off dong by Marcus Semien and then just kept hitting bombs. Six of them, in fact. That’s the most for Texas at The Shed since the building opened in 2020. But even with the fireworks and leads of 1-0,...

Thoughts on a 2-0 Rangers win
Photo by Ron Jenkins/ Rangers 2, Mariners 0 Rangers 2, Mariners 0 Ah, the stresses of a playoff race. And of close games in a playoff race. Jordan Montgomery was matched up against Logan Gilbert and was masterful, going seven shutout innings. Just five hits and two walks allowed by Montgomery, who struck out six. Montgomery mixed his pitches well, using his sinker, change and curveball in roughly equal amounts, while mixing in his four seamer from time to time as well. Seven swings and misses on his change, five on his curve, three ln his fastball. A terrific...
86-68 - A little luck helps Rangers to 2-0 win over M’s
Photo by Ron Jenkins/ That’s a series win The Texas Rangers scored twice while the Seattle Mariners scored zero runs. There wasn’t a lot of hard hit balls from the Rangers tonight but they made ‘em count when they needed to. A two-out, cue shot off the bat of Mitch Garver in the bottom of the 2nd and a bloop from Jonah “The Kyle Seager of Rangers” Heim to plate a run in the bottom of the 4th were all Texas mustered off Logan Gilbert and the Seattle staff. The Rangers RBI singles were 65.8 mph and 63.2 mph — softest hit balls of the game for the Rangers—...
