Golden Nuggets: Rams Week, 2018, Vol. 1

Golden Nuggets: Rams Week, 2018, Vol. 1

A daily compilation of 49ers news from around the net. Sunday, October 21st, 2018 edition. Good morning (or good afternoon if you’re across a pond) folks, it’s game day! The 49ers host the powerhouse Los Angeles Rams in what was supposed to be a nationally televised night game, but has been downgraded to a regionally televised afternoon game. This competition was slated to be one of the better games of the season, as former Shanahan assistant Sean McVay has done great things with a strong roster he inherited from the aggressively mediocre Jeff Fisher, and the 49ers became burgeoning...

Five 49ers to watch against the Rams

Five 49ers to watch against the Rams

The 49ers face off with the Rams in Week 7 at Levi’s Stadium - here are five players to watch in this NFC West matchup. The San Francisco 49ers face the undefeated Los Angeles Rams Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in one of the season’s most anticipated matchups. While the loss of franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo may have damped the competitive expectations, there’s no denying the friendly tension between head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. We know the 49ers are going to look good come Sunday, with the unveiling of the team’s all-white 1994 throwback uniforms. While every...

49ers have a chance to make a statement with their O-Line

49ers have a chance to make a statement with their O-Line

They’ve gotten high praise, now the Rams will offer the ultimate test on if they are legit. One of the crowning achievements of the San Francisco 49ers 2018 season (one of the few) is how the retooled offensive line has jumped in rankings. The 2018 line is ranked sixth in Pro Football Focus’ offensive line rankings, thanks largely in part to the two anchormen Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey. The latter of which has been a frequent member of PFF’s Team of the Week. We can’t forget Laken Tomlinson who had a lukewarm reception to his extension this past offseason has been holding his...

49ers promote Tyvis Powell, waive Tom Savage

Well, that didn’t take long. The San Francisco 49ers announced a pair of roster moves in anticipation to their Sunday home. Moves don’t seem surprising but the names are. They are promoting defensive back Tyvis Powell to the active roster (again) and waiving quarterback Tom Savage. Powell has been in and out of the 53-man roster. He was promoted in late September before the Kansas City Chiefs game for depth behind an injured Jaquiski Tartt. He was waived earlier in October to make room for Victor Bolden Jr.’s return from suspension. Tom Savage was signed earlier this week...

Mullens on being overlooked: ‘I don’t know, but I don’t really care’

The now-backup quarterback for the 49ers was the latest guest on Matt Maiocco’s podcast. The most popular person on the 49ers roster is always the backup quarterback and Nick Mullens has inherited that role now that C.J. Beathard has been inserted in the starting lineup. He joined Matt Maiocco on the 49ers Insider Podcast to talk about his college recruitment and his slow rise in the pros. Many may not realize it, but Mullens’ alma mater is Southern Miss, the same as NFL hall of famer Brett Favre. The more crucial piece of history is how Mullens shattered several Southern Miss passing...

3rd down and positive: The 49ers defense improves

3rd down and positive: The 49ers defense improves

Despite a heartbreaking loss the 49ers young defense shows promise Somewhere in the third quarter after our second field goal I felt something. It was the feeling of inevitability. I knew we couldn’t sustain our lead three points at a time. The dynamic offense from the first half was no more, it was only a matter of time before Aaron Rodgers did his thing. However before A-Rod time, the young 49ers defense had his number. He looked surprisingly timid. He hesitated and misfired. We finished the game with three sacks. It would’ve been a key fourth sack but a ticky-tack defensive penalty...

Week 8 college football watch list, game thread

Week 8 of the college football season is upon us! We’ve got a game thread for you along with some prospects to keep an eye on. Greetings 49ers Faithful! Week 8 of the college football season is upon us, and after a heart-breaking loss against the Green Bay Packers, the reality of our draft positioning is becoming more apparent. Ideally, picking late in the draft in hopes of a successful season full of “W’s” determining the team’s draft fate is the positive outlook of a team on the rise. However, the direction of the team has some fans asking questions and although expectations...

Could Trent Taylor’s back injury hurt his career?

Could Trent Taylor’s back injury hurt his career?

The 49ers wide receiver made a great impression, now a non-serious back injury seems to keep hanging itself over him. Trent Taylor was Mr. Reliable last year, more so when Jimmy Garoppolo took over. Whenever third down came up and the 49ers needed a play, all Kyle Shanahan had to do was call Taylor’s number. Punt returns, catches, it all led to 430 yards and two touchdowns in 2017. Then he had back surgery and hasn’t been quite the same. Taylor has catches, and punts, but throughout OTAs and training camp it was revealed he had back surgery and when Week 1 rolled around and something...

The 49ers will win/lose against the Rams if...

This either is going to be a fun game, or it’s going to be very, very ugly. You all knew this game was coming. So it’s come to this. The Los Angeles Rams and a Jimmy Garoppolo-less 49ers team. The Rams had to happen, a game against the NFL’s elite was a must. Though we all may have liked it better if we had Jimmy G. Nevertheless, it’s time for the 49ers to play one of the best teams in the NFC. The Minnesota Vikings have shown they have their issues, the Lions coughed up a win, and the 49ers managed to hold their own against the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s the elite of the 49ers...

Breaking down the 49ers’ dominant rushing attack against the Packers

Breaking down the 49ers’ dominant rushing attack against the Packers

What’s helping the 49ers be so successful on the ground? No matter where Kyle Shanahan goes and regardless of who’s in his offensive backfield, his rushing attack continues to dominate opposing defenses. With the 49ers’ starting running back down and a backup quarterback managing the offense, San Francisco is the fourth-best rushing team based on total yardage and tied for first in the NFL based on yards per attempt. Running backs Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert continued to do damage this past Monday night in Green Bay, rushing for 174 yards on 30 attempts and giving the 49ers’ a...

Golden Nuggets: Poor Carlos Hyde

Golden Nuggets: Poor Carlos Hyde

Your San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday, October 19th 2018 So while we are dreading the Los Angeles Rams coming to town, a few fun things in NFL-land happened on Friday. Namely our old friend Carlos Hyde. Remember him? Man, he’d be helpful right about now. Last year he fought Matt Breida for playing time, this year we could use him to take playing time so Breida can get healthy. Well, due to just not being a fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense (that catching passes thing didn’t help him much) Hyde went to the Cleveland Browns. And now not even a half season in, Hyde is traded to the...

Kyle Shanahan has his eye out for a thief from his high school years

Kyle Shanahan has his eye out for a thief from his high school years

The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their media availability on Friday as the team continues preparations for a Week 7 divisional showdown with the Los Angeles Rams. It is alumni week in Santa Clara, with the organization honoring the 1994 roster that won Super Bowl 29 and also Dwight Clark. The team will unveil a statue in front of the stadium commemorating The Catch, and featuring Joe Montana and Dwight Clark. The team will also be wearing their new white alternate uniforms, which are similar to the throwbacks they wore in 1994. That season, Mike Shanahan served his final season with the...

(Richard) Sherman’s March to Fame and Riches

(Richard) Sherman’s March to Fame and Riches

The old lion is roaring in San Francisco. The 7th oldest guy on the 49ers roster may be the team’s most successful player this season. And that could earn him a lot of money. A lot of people shook their heads when Richard Sherman gave up an 18-yard pass to Minnesota’s Stefon Diggs on his first target in game one. It was a mistake spending all that money on a 30-year-old cornerback coming off of a season-ending Achilles heel injury, everyone said. But then he didn’t give up another reception until Week 6. Per PFF, Sherman leads all NFL cornerbacks this year in every category except...

Next month will help shape 49ers draft pick scenario in 2019

Next month will help shape 49ers draft pick scenario in 2019

The 49ers face three teams in direct competition for a high draft pick. The Arizona Cardinals got thumped on Thursday Night Football to open Week 7, and look very much like a team ready to kick up the competition for the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. They fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, so the offense might improve, but for the time being, they’re pretty awful. As the weekend approaches, I wanted to take a look at the draft pick odds as they stood prior to TNF. The Cardinals improved their odds, but with their loss we can still assess what things looked like heading into Week...

49ers final injury report is in for Week 7

49ers final injury report is in for Week 7

The 49ers secondary and wide receivers are dealing with an assortment of issues. The San Francisco 49ers released their final injury report for Week 7, and there are no surprises. Shanahan confirmed a few he discussed this morning, including Dante Pettis listed as out, Jimmie Ward listed as doubtful, and Trent Taylor and Pierre Garçon listed as questionable. Taylor was inactive last week, while Garçon played after missing two practices. My guess is Garçon plays, while Taylor is a game-time decision. The team is conducting a walkthrough on Friday, hoping to save the team’s legs after a...
