Oops: Gary Bettman and the NHL guessed really wrong on last season’s revenue

Oops: Gary Bettman and the NHL guessed really wrong on last season’s revenue

Shit happens! | Photo by Bruce Bennett/ At a time when revenue projections for next year would normally be just about nailed down, we find out the 2018-2019 numbers were really wrong. Today, Bob McKenzie revealed the share of escrow returned to players for the 2018-2019 season: NHL and NHLPA have recently reached agreement on final numbers for Hockey Related Revenue (HRR) for the 2018-19 NHL season. Players paid 12.9% escrow for 18-19. They’ll be getting back a little more than 3%. The owners will get the balance of slightly less than 10%.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) March 31,...

Tuesday’s FTB: What to watch instead of hockey

Tuesday’s FTB: What to watch instead of hockey

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports Searching for something to fill that hole in your life? We’ve got you. Now that we’re at week a hundred thousand without hockey, and people are beginning to reach the limit of housing repairs to attempt, tiktok dances to try and learn, and obsessive cleaning to get done, we all need something new to fill the hours that used to be filled by watching the Toronto Maple Leafs do their best/worst. With this in mind, I’ve pulled together a list of movie and tv show recommendations that I hope capture the essential energy of each Atlantic division team,...

Free agents: is there a hidden cost, or is this all risk-free?

Free agents: is there a hidden cost, or is this all risk-free?

Photo by Julian Avram/Icon Sportswire via The first free agent season has fallen in the hiatus, so it’s time to examine the risks of signing players who’ve never set skate in the NHL before. Right now the Maple Leafs have nothing at all to do except look for first-time free agents to sign or call up Gary Bettman to offer playoff formats in case this season does resume. Unlike many other teams, the Leafs have signed everyone to an ELC they seem to be interested in out of their prospect pool, and they aren’t rushing to deal with re-signing expiring UFAs or RFAs. Some fans just like...

Monday’s FTB: Cure me of my writers block

Monday’s FTB: Cure me of my writers block

I’m supposed to actually do stuff here, I guess. It’s been 18 days since the NHL postponed the 2019-20 season. I’m a lucky one whose routine hasn’t change since I’m working as an “essential” service* so I’ve been going about my business as usual, but I have been struck by the inspiration of getting stuff done around the house. I cleaned the basement, fixed some cupboard doors and installed new lighting in the kitchen, re-organized my tools, re-did storage for portable kitchen appliances (I have a food processor! Who knew?), and only broke three things while doing all of...

Maple Leafs linked to free agent Alexander Barabanov

Maple Leafs linked to free agent Alexander Barabanov

Less than one month ago, Barabanov was playing in the KHL. | Photo by Peter Kovalev\TASS via The KHL free agent rush is on. Three weeks ago Alexander Barabanov played in a playoff game for SKA St. Petersburg. He played over 33 minutes, the second most of any forward, in a game that went into three overtime periods. SKA won it on a goal from Lukas Bengstsson at 113:27 into the game giving SKA the sweep of Vityaz in the first round of the playoffs. They were free to rest up for the second round. And then the season was over. Barabanov wasn’t going to get a chance at another Gagarin Cup...

Weekend FTB: If the Leafs are fully healthy, what’s your ideal lineup?

Weekend FTB: If the Leafs are fully healthy, what’s your ideal lineup?

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports With the news that Mikheyev is back to full health, let’s have some rosterbation fun. It’s a sad fact that the Maple Leafs have yet to have a single game all season with a fully healthy lineup. Hyman and Dermott started the year injured, and by the time they got back the Leafs had already begun a rotating carousel of injuries to the likes of Tavares, Marner, Johnsson (twice), Muzzin (twice), Rielly, Kerfoot, Ceci, Mikheyev, Andersen, and probably some others I can’t remember off the top of my head. With the news that Ilya Mikheyev is now back at 100%...

Friday’s FTB: Four hockey-related things I miss and four I don’t right now

Friday’s FTB: Four hockey-related things I miss and four I don’t right now

Hockey: sometimes you can’t live with it, and sometimes you can’t live without it. It’s finally Friday. Another week which felt like it was ten days long is coming to an end. There have been a few empty moments in the past few days where some ideas have popped into my mind about what I would normally be doing at that time. Naturally ,hockey-related activities and writing for PPP are often involved. Sometimes I laugh thinking about what I do not miss. I thought I would compile a list for today’s FTB. And, here it is. Three things I don’t miss Everyone on the Leafs getting...

Thursday’s FTB: When should we do the Top 25 Under 25?

Thursday’s FTB: When should we do the Top 25 Under 25?

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA - JUNE 22: Nicholas Robertson, 53rd overall pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, poses for a portrait during Rounds 2-7 of the 2019 NHL Draft at Rogers Arena on June 22, 2019 in Vancouver, Canada. | Photo by Andre Ringuette/NHLI via and the NHL postpones the Draft, Combine, and Awards show. We have a question. Every August — after June’s playoffs and NHL Entry Draft are concluded, most (if not all) players safely under contract, and all GM transactions made —we sit down together as a masthead and readership and put down our thoughts and predictions for the...

Kyle Clifford wants another tour on the Leafs

Kyle Clifford wants another tour on the Leafs

Photo by Julian Avram/Icon Sportswire via And the Leafs are interested per his agent. The Toronto Sun had an article out two days ago, one of their standard sorts where it’s not just about one thing, but has whole disparate bits haphazardly glued together. It’s a sign of the times that I missed the nugget of news inside it. Not who Morgan Rielly is dating, although that is the headline, but the quote from Kyle Clifford’s agent about his desire to re-sign with the Leafs. He does. According to his agent, the Leafs want him back too. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be. Even if...

FTB: Social distancing through social media stalking

FTB: Social distancing through social media stalking

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Golf season has started earlier than ever. As we all seek things to occupy the time that was previously taken up by hockey, distract from a general sense of existential dread, and fight against the urge to give ourselves bangs (I assume all of this is universal and not just me), many people have been spending more and more time on social media. Luckily, this also includes NHL players who are currently stuck at home, bored, and unable to go golfing. Stalking players’ social media accounts is basically the same thing as watching hockey right? chillin—...

NHL and some teams layoff workers, cut pay

It’s not like they’re made of money... | Photo by Andrea Cardin/NHLI via The measures are a response to the suspension of play in the NHL due to the coronavirus pandemic. Today, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan has reported that the NHL is going to temporarily cut the pay of league office employees. The NHL has three offices in New York, Toronto and Montreal. It’s not clear if this move applies to employees in all three locations and both countries. The league confirmed that salaries will be reduced across the board starting April 1. This is a breaking story, and no other details are...

CHL playoffs and Memorial Cup cancelled

Today the three Canadian junior hockey leagues, the OHL, WHL and QMJHL have announced the cancellation of their playoffs, and therefore the Memorial Cup. NHL News and 1 Rumour

NHL News and 1 Rumour

Photo by Kevin Light/ If I were evil, I’d have called that a Sandin Rumour in the headline. But it is a Sandin rumour. If you’ve been ignoring sports, you’re not alone, and it’s not hard, as there’s almost nothing happening with the Russians even getting the memo (rather literally, as the government had to force this) to close down at least temporarily. The NHL has been doing a few things. After they announced “Pause Binge” on Friday, some of our sharper commenters found the classic games feature. If you missed this whole thing, catch up here: I watched some of the game...
