Hayward and Gobert deserve All Star bids

Hayward and Gobert deserve All Star bids

And I hope they both get snubbed Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert fly under the radar among casual NBA fans. Opposing coaches, players, and scouts are worried about these two, but somehow they still aren’t regarded as All Star caliber players - Gobert is easily a top 5 center in the league (in my estimation no center in the game right now has a greater impact), and Hayward is arguably the 4th best player at his position (LeBron, Durant, Leonard). They both deserve an All Star nod this season, and both are unlikely to be voted in. Part of the reason for this is that the casual fan likes...

Utah Jazz 106 - Phoenix Suns 101: Game Recap

Utah Jazz 106 - Phoenix Suns 101: Game Recap

Gordon Hayward put the Jazz up for good seconds to play, and Rudy Gobert sealed the win with a defensive dagger. Tell me these guys aren’t All-Stars. The Utah Jazz (27-16) escaped from the valley of the Phoenix Suns (13-28) in what was a way more competitive game than it ever should have been. The 106-101 victory was, frankly, improbable with how poorly Utah was mailing it in for most of this game. Sure, Eric Bledsoe always slices the Jazz to pieces (31 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 7/7 from the line). And yes, Devin Booker is on a fantastic run right now (27, 22, 28, 39, 39, and 25...

Utah Jazz star Gordon Hayward named Western Conference Player of the Week

Utah Jazz star Gordon Hayward named Western Conference Player of the Week

Gettin’ too big, yo. The NBA announced today that Gordon Hayward was named Western Conference Player of the Week. Hayward led the Utah Jazz to a 3-1 record, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, and Orlando Magic at home — and dropping a tough game against the Memphis Grizzlies on the road. (Tough game = second night of a back to back, third game in four nights, fifth game in seven nights, last game in a five game road trip that switched time zones a few times.) Hayward was ballin’ this week. The #NBA Players of the Week!@DeMar_DeRozan of the @Raptors @gordonhayward of...

Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns: Game Preview

Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns: Game Preview

The Utah Jazz (26-16) visit the Phoenix Suns (13-27) tonight. This is something of a high point in the season for the Utah Jazz. They're 26-16, Rudy Gobert and Gordon Hayward are playing like all-stars, and, for the first time since 2010, are all but a lock for the playoffs. Even the bad luck for the Jazz hasn't been quite as bad as usual: we all held our collective breath when we saw Rodney Hood fall to the ground, screaming in pain, but his season isn't over! He suffered a bone bruise, as I'm sure nearly everyone reading this blog knows, and will return relatively soon. The Phoenix Suns...

Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns: 5 things to watch

Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns: 5 things to watch

Utah visits Phoenix missing one Rodney Hood Having narrowly avoided multiple scares on Saturday, from both the Orlando Magic and Rodney Hood’s knees, the Utah Jazz (26-16) will head to Arizona to face off against the pesky Phoenix Suns (13-27). There aren’t a ton of story-lines, this being a middle-of-the-season match-up against a below .500 opponent. But there are still a few things you can keep an eye or two on. Where will the SG minutes go? Rodney Hood has been declared out after hyper-extending his knee on a fast-break against the Orlando Magic on Saturday (maybe that’s why we...

Should the Utah Jazz Draft Another Weber State Wildcat?

Should the Utah Jazz Draft Another Weber State Wildcat?

The Jazz took a flyer on Weber State standout Joel Bolomboy. Let’s look at Jeremy Senglin. I know what you’re thinking. “Hey, wait a minute! The Utah Jazz are still playing basketball! Why are we talking about 2nd-round draft picks?” Two reasons: I have some time on my hands this weekend and The fellow I’m about to evaluate could be a valuable asset for an NBA team next season. The Jazz will still have their lone 2nd-round pick when the draft rolls around, assuming they a) don’t trade it and b) finish with a better record than the New York Knicks or Detroit Pistons. They also...

Rodney Hood hyper-extension and bone contusion confirmed by Utah Jazz PR

Will not play against Phoenix Suns The Utah Jazz confirmed the previous estimation of the injury (by me) and the ‘sourced’ information by Tony Jones (Salt Lake Tribune). Rodney Hood injury update: Bone Bruise

Rodney Hood injury update: Bone Bruise

No structural damage, reports Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune Last night Rodney Hood hyper-extended his right knee. It looked bad. It probably felt worse as Hood stayed on the floor for an extended period of time shouting and banging his fist on the hardwood. He needed help leaving the court and did not return to the game, Utah Jazz 114 - Orlando Magic 107. (Hood’s injury history and breakdown here) Three of the best beatwriters in the business, Jody Genessy of the Deseret News, Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune, and Andy Larsen of KSL, have tirelessly been on this case. Jody...

What can the Utah Jazz do if Rodney Hood is out for an extended period?

What can the Utah Jazz do if Rodney Hood is out for an extended period?

Five possible players Quin Snyder can turn to for now Last night the Utah Jazz (26-16) won the game, but lost Rodney Hood. He hyper-extended his right knee with under 2:00 minutes to go in the game, left, and did not return. It’s a shame because Utah has been very injured this year and had FINALLY gotten healthy enough for Quin Snyder to start assigning players to the healthy, but inactive roster. All in all Utah has already had to deal with 51 games without one of their five normal starters this year, and 101 games without one of their top 10 rotation players. The three major culprits...

Former BYU stud Jimmer Fredette hacked on twitter!

Hacker revealed plans to retire from basketball Jimmer Fredette is a pretty successful guy, even if he’s not currently an NBA All-Star. He has a trophy case that’s stuffed with high school, college, and pro awards. The sharpshooter led the NCAAs in scoring on his way to the National college player of the year award in 2011. He was a top 10 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. And he’s been putting in buckets as a professional for the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Westchester Knicks (NBA DL), New York Knicks, and Shanghai Sharks (China). He’s been an All-Star in a...

Utah Jazz 114 - Orlando Magic 107: Game Recap

Utah Jazz 114 - Orlando Magic 107: Game Recap

Orlando scores 42 points in first quarter, Utah prevails, but loses Hood The Utah Jazz (25-16) made this game much harder on themselves, but still found a way to come back and beat the Orlando Magic (17-24) by an acceptable margin: 114-107. First of all, yes, Rodney Hood is hurt. We don’t know how badly. But we do have a post on that over here, for that discussion: Utah Jazz guard Rodney Hood hyper-extends right knee in fourth quarter against Orlando Magic #TakeNote https://t.co/b489BD8GvJ— SLC Dunk (@slcdunk) January 15, 2017 Let’s keep this about the game that happened, and the...

Utah Jazz guard Rodney Hood hyper-extends right knee in fourth quarter against Orlando Magic

Starting shooting guard goes down with 1:43 to play in Jazz win The Utah Jazz (25-16) just collected another win and are rolling right now because of health. However, tonight they got another sting from the injury bug as starting shooting guard Rodney Hood hyper-extended his right knee on a fast break attempt with 1:43 left in the game. We will have more information as soon as we get it. Below we have a video of the injury, and viewer discretion is advised. (Video courtesy of Moni.) (Also, this is not the game recap.) . . . . . Utah Jazz vs Orlando Magic: Overtone - Mascot Deathmath!

Utah Jazz vs Orlando Magic: Overtone - Mascot Deathmath!

I’m not exactly sure where I was going with this post, but it did lead to more than two hours spent looking up videos of mascots... Stuff the Magic Dragon was named the NBA’s Mascot of the Year last year. In that year, he’s done some pretty cool stuff, especially famously as assisting on Aaron Gordon’s dunk. Stuff has been the Orlando Magic ’s mascot ever since their conception as a franchise in 1989. His common antics apparently include back-flipping off of really tall ladders, break dancing to song mashups, and messing around on trampolines, in addition your typical mascot...

Utah Jazz sharpshooter Rodney Hood had quite a night against the Detroit Pistons

Utah Jazz sharpshooter Rodney Hood had quite a night against the Detroit Pistons

And I’m not just talking about this dunk, either. Last night the Utah Jazz (25-16) defeated the Detroit Pistons (18-24) by the mighty margin of 110-77. It was a pretty close game in the first quarter, but the home team was down by five after one. The offense was lethargic, missing easy shots, and not at all looking like a top ten offense. And yes, even with the Jazz managing a 120.1 ORTG for this game the team has now dropped to 12th best in the NBA. Utah’s offense has had some issues of late. But thankfully starting shooting guard Rodney Hood erupted in the second quarter -- and stayed...

Utah Jazz vs Orlando Magic: 5 Things to Watch

Utah Jazz vs Orlando Magic: 5 Things to Watch

Can the Jazz get a streak going? After stomping the Detroit Pistons, the Utah Jazz (25-16) will face the Orlando Magic (17-24). Here are five things to watch for: 1. Will Dante Exum Play? There was a break in the clouds, the heavens opened and it happened. After another disappointing outing from Shelvin Mack, Quin Snyder FINALLY put in Dante Exum and he played solid. Exum's return to the rotation: 4 PTS, 4 AST, 3 STL, 2 REB, a couple nice drives and a +9 in 16 minutes. Mack was -8 in five minutes.— Andy Bailey (@AndrewDBailey) January 14, 2017 At times it’s been baffling to see...
