West Virginia Position Preview: Safeties

West Virginia Position Preview: Safeties

West Virginia has established starters at all three safety positions and a surprisingly talented two-deep; can they be the difference makers our defense so desperately needs them to be in 2018? West Virginia's use of the 3-3-5 stack means that safeties naturally play an important role in our defense. Ever since we first adopted the scheme nearly two decades ago, their athleticism has been crucial to our ability to defend in space, and their versatility has allowed us to guard against multiple formations and personnel groupings without having to substitute ourselves. We've been fortunate...

Let’s talk about what looked to be a supernova burning out in record breaking time. We, of course, know that Boyd ended up signing elsewhere and Hestie never played a meaningful down of college football. West Virginia Position Preview: Special Teams

The Mountaineers have their returner to give them flashbacks of Tavon Austin Gone are the days of Pat McAfee and Nick O’Toole. The Mountaineers have struggled on special teams the past few years but now it looks like there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. With Tavon Austin, the Mountaineers were one misstep or one good block away from a kickoff going 99 yards for seven. With Mario Alford, the Mountaineers continued to be dangerous if the kickoff team wasn’t disciplined. It has been a while since the return team had to worry about the Mountaineers but that might be the case...

2018 West Virginia Football Position Preview: The Offensive Line

We’ve got ourselves some road graders up front this season. The West Virginia Mountaineers are currently boasting what should be one of the best offensive lines in the Big 12 Conference this season, and what certainly is one of the largest in school history. When Dana Holgorsen arrived in Morgantown in 2011, the majority of the offensive linemen were of the 6’2”-6’4” variety - save for current Tennessee Titans starter Quinton Spain. Today, Spain’s 6’5”, 348lb frame is the standard for the Mountaineers. Holgorsen and offensive line coach Joe Wickline realized that opposing...

2018 West Virginia Football Position Preview: The Running Backs

Don't look now, but West Virginia's backfield could low-key be kind of loaded.. It might feel weird to think that we could lose a back-to-back 1000-yard rusher and former Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and be in a better place, but that might be exactly what we see happen this year. And it's not without precedent - you'll recall Wendell Smallwood leading the Big 12 in rushing in 2016 after Rushel Shell's graduation. THE STARTER I spent most of last year not-so-quietly advocating for Kennedy McKoy to be the feature back over Justin Crawford, so it would be an understatement to say...

If you're looking for reasons why West Virginia fans are excited for 2018, look no further than Mr. William Grier West Virginia's quarterback tradition has been something of a mixed bag historically. We've had a couple of legitimate household names like Major Harris and Pat White, guys who in addition to their prodigious individual talents were also able to lead our team to success on the national stage. There are guys like Jeff Hostetler, Marc Bulger, and Geno Smith who were bona-fide stars in their own right, but never really took our team to that next level. Then there's a whole handful...
