Husky softball prepares for a familiar opponent in Super Regional: Utah

The 6th-seeded Dawgs host the 11th-seeded Utes for a best-of-three series this weekend for the right to go the WCWS. Schedule (all times PDT): Game 1: Friday, 8 PM, ESPN2 Game 2: Saturday, 6 PM, ESPN2 Game 3, if necessary: Sunday, 7 PM, ESPNU Scouting the Utes The Huskies were able to sweep the Utes in Salt Lake City two weeks ago, but two of the three games went to extra innings, including a dramatic 12-run rally by Washington in game 3 to come back from a 12-1 deficit. Unlike much of the Pac-12, Utah is not a traditional powerhouse; this is one of the best seasons in program history, if...

Super Dawgs: Husky softball eliminates Michigan 4-2, advances to Super Regional

Super Dawgs: Husky softball eliminates Michigan 4-2, advances to Super Regional

The 6th-seeded Huskies got enough offense from Ali Aguilar, Kelly Burdick, and Morganne Flores to back Taran Alvelo in the circle. The Washington Husky softball team defeated Michigan 4-2 on Sunday to advance to the Super Regional round next weekend, where they will host the Utah Utes. Taran Alvelo pitched a complete game for the win (what else is new?), Morganne Flores and Ali Aguilar had clutch hits (what else is new?), and defensive specialist Kelly Burdick contributed a major offensive threat (okay, that’s kind of new). Part I: Recap: Kelly Burdick had a great game, reaching base all...

NCAA Softball Regional Final Game Thread: Washington vs. Michigan

NCAA Softball Regional Final Game Thread: Washington vs. Michigan

6th-seeded Husky softball takes on Michigan today a 4 PM for a spot in Super Regionals. Michigan would have to win two in a row to advance. A walk-off three-run homer by junior DP Julia DePonte gave the Huskies a 12-4 run-rule victory yesterday against Michigan. The Wolverines bounced back to eliminate Fresno State 4-0 to return to the regional final today, but the Huskies are in the driver’s seat, needing just 1 win today and having two chances to get it, if needed. Schedule 4 PM, ESPN3 (for certain) and ESPNU (probably, but rain delays/extra innings in other games can cause channel...

Softball 5-19 Recap: A no-hitter for Taran Alvelo!

Softball 5-19 Recap: A no-hitter for Taran Alvelo!

Husky Softball opened their NCAA tournament run with a 8-0 run-rule shortened no-hit shutout of the Montana Grizzlies. Author’s note: This will be a brief recap, because I have to go to work at my job that I actually get paid for in a few minutes (sad face). Because of this, I will unfortunately not be able to cover/tweet about the game today, other than occasionally on my breaks and such. I will be back for tomorrow’s games. The best source to follow the games today in my absence is to follow @J_Kirshenbaum on Twitter. He’s the UW Daily writer that covers the softball team, and...

the Gekko Files: spring around the PAC, part III

the Gekko Files: spring around the PAC, part III

We finish our spring reviews with Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon State I don’t mind telling you - spring is hard. As spring turns to summer, it gets even harder. Football practices are over, spring sports are racing to their conclusions and the prospect of two months with only the puerility of the “Capitol Olympics” to occupy whatever attention we pay to news cycles until August finally arrives. Nevertheless, August will eventually arrive and with it plenty of speculation about how things are likely to go for our beloved Huskies football team and all of the rivals that compete with...

Softball Press Conference: 5-18-17

Softball Press Conference: 5-18-17

Husky Softball head coach Heather Tarr and seniors Ali Aguilar and Casey Stangel met briefly with the media on Thursday afternoon. There wasn’t too much said of great interest, as it served as more of an introductory press conference than anything else. The one message I was really able to gather was the intense focus by this team on what’s in front of them, right here, right now. Two brief comments by the seniors on one question, and a separate response by head coach Heather Tarr, combined to really drive home the idea that we are only focused on us, our opponent right now, and what we...

Five things I learned watching a Husky Softball practice

Five things I learned watching a Husky Softball practice

Given the generous opportunity by coach Heather Tarr and her staff to cover the Seattle regional this weekend as a media member, here are some observations from a team practice. Author’s note: I was surprised and honored when the SID for Husky Softball reached out to me to invite me to cover the team for the upcoming Seattle regional as a member of the media. The team graciously offered me the opportunity to come to a softball practice and have a chance to interview head coach Heather Tarr, as well as a player or two. I never would have thought my casual writing on a fan website would...

Home Sweet Home: Husky Softball awarded #6 overall seed for NCAA Softball tournament

Home Sweet Home: Husky Softball awarded #6 overall seed for NCAA Softball tournament

The 6th-seeded Huskies begin their trek towards the Women’s College World Series at home against Montana on Friday night. The road to the Women’s College World Series has been announced, and the Husky Softball team received the #6 overall seed, which is a fairly accurate recognition of their very strong performance this season (I was expecting 7 most likely, anywhere from 5 to 8 possible). By virtue of being the #6 seed, the Huskies will not play any more road games this season. UW will host the Seattle regional this weekend, and, as a top-8 seed, would be assured of hosting a Super...
