St. Louis Cardinals: It is time to trade Dexter Fowler

Last year, the St. Louis Cardinals locked in to a five year deal with Dexter Fowler. So far, it has not panned out in favor of the Birds. At the time of signing, it felt more like a response to losing Jason Heyward than anything else. The Cubs took a Cardinal, so the St. Louis […] St. Louis Cardinals: It is time to trade Dexter Fowler - Redbird Rants - Redbird Rants - A St. Louis Cardinals Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Cubs Stock Market Report: Rivalry week

The Cubs split six games with their closest division rivals. Blue Chip Stocks: Addison Russell: I think Addy has put to rest any trade speculation to rest in recent weeks, as he’s hit .321/.376/.436 (122 wRC+) in the past 30 days. This past week, Russell went 6-for-19 with two doubles, a home run, and five runs scored. He ranks fourth among National League shortstops in fWAR, oh, and did I mention he has three more years of control? Happy birthday Chris Coghlan and Steve Cishek, RIP Eddie Gaedel, and other stories A Cubs-centric look at baseball’s past. Here’s a handy Cubs timeline. Today in baseball history: 1940 - Dodger Ducky Medwick, acquired in a trade less than a week ago, is beaned by former Cardinal teammate Bob Bowman and needs to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Brooklyn president Lee MacPhail accuses the St. Louis pitcher of deliberately hitting Medwick in the head because the two had quarreled in a hotel elevator prior to the game. (1) Box score. Chicago Cubs The Mike Montgomery Trade Revisited

Do you remember how you felt when the Mike Montgomery was announced? I do. I was disappointed. Now can you imagine where this Cubs team would be without Montgomery? Chicago Cubs: Get Manny Machado! Get Bryce Harper! No, get real.

Rampant and rabid speculation regarding the Chicago Cubs and big-ticket free agents continues. But there’s way more to the discussion than star power. Chicago Cubs: Why do people take Pedro Strop for granted?

Often, relievers are looked at in an interchangeable fashion. When the Chicago Cubs acquired Jake Arrieta in 2013, they landed an invaluable bullpen arm. Of course, everyone remembers that trade because Arrieta brought home a Cy Young Award and played a critical role in the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series run. Could Anthony Bass be a trade piece?

The just called-up righthander has had big-league experience and has a good arm. It’s not a secret that I think the Cubs callup of Anthony Bass was a bit of chicanery. I doubt Bass is much better than Cory Mazzoni, who he replaced. I also think his inability to be directly sent back to Iowa (he’d need to clear waivers) is an entirely significant hurdle (he likely wouldn’t clear). Throwing that and more into the crockpot, and I think Bass is an early-July trade piece. For the basics, Bass was a 2008 Padres fifth-round choice from Detroit’s Wayne State. He debuted in MLB with San...

As Rangers visit Dodgers, a pitcher could be Texas' top return from trade that sent Yu Darvish to LA

A pitcher could be the top return for the Rangers from last year's deal that sent right-hander Yu Darvish to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The clubs meet at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night for the first time since the trade. Darvish is long gone, signing with the Chicago Cubs as a free agent in the offseason. Jake Arrieta is killin’ it this year, unlike most of the other free agent starters on the market last year. As last year’s off-season played out, it became clear that the free agent market was working itself out in a way that would enable the Phillies to sign of the starting pitchers on the market. The two starters perceived to be at the top of the heap were Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta, with Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Tyler Chatwood and others a tier or two below.
