MLB draft 2019: Which Tigers draft picks have signed?

Here we will keep track of which Tigers draft picks have signed, and how their bonuses affect the Tigers’ pool. The Detroit Tigers signed sixth round pick Cooper Johnson to a full-slot bonus on Monday evening, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis. Johnson, a catcher from Ole Miss, is regarded as one of the top defenders in the draft. He projects as a below-average hitter, but has some raw power the Tigers are hoping he taps into at the professional level. Johnson is the fifth Tigers draft pick in the top 10 rounds to sign his professional contract. Eighth rounder Jack Kenley, a shortstop...

Game 64 Preview: Tigers at Royals

The Tigers and Royals are competing for little more than fourth place at this point. The 2020 MLB draft is 11 1⁄2 months away, but the events that take place this week could have a big impact on how next June shapes up. The Tigers and Royals, two bad teams that will kick off the College World Series festivities in Omaha, Neb. on Thursday — presumably to get the fans excited for better baseball to come over the weekend — still have 13 games left to play against one another in 2019. The two teams are already in position for top-five picks again in 2020, and one could take a stranglehold...

James McCann: Coming into his own ... or outperforming his skills?

The catcher has clearly improved at the plate, but there is a bit of luck that’s come with his success as well Back in 2008, James McCann was drafted for the first time, out of high school, in the 31st round ... by the Chicago White Sox. He decided to go to school, and in the process greatly improved his draft status, as the Detroit Tigers selected him in the second round in 2011. McCann quickly rose up Detroit’s minor league ranks, earned himself a promotion to the big leagues in 2014, and stayed there. In 452 games in Detroit, McCann had a 75 wRC+, with a slash line of .240/.288/.366...

BYB Podcast 48: Riding the Miggy rollercoaster

The Bless You Boys editorial staff looks at the week in baseball from a Tigers perspective. Ashley and Brandon return on Day 2 of the MLB draft, but the Tigers matchup with the Rays, and more particularly, the lows and highs of one day with an aging superstar, ended up stealing the show. Miguel Cabrera’s knee will never be right, as announced on Tuesday. Of course, he then had a three-hit night with a grand slam for good measure. Still, while the full-time move to DH is finally here, it’s hard not to start thinking about his legacy and the different perspectives one has when...
