Spring training numbers matter for some but not all

Reds manager Bryan Price only considers spring training numbers for some players.

White Sox pummel Diamondbacks just one day after, well, getting pummeled

The White Sox didn’t stop hitting in a 15-2 shellacking, their biggest outburst of the spring Following their worst effort of the spring, the Chicago White Sox responded with a vengeance and pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks, 15-2, on Monday. The pitching staff threw a combined no-hitter through seven innings, before Alberto Rosario doubled off Robbie Ross Jr. If the Chisox could have squeezed just six more hitless outs, it would have been the 30th spring training combined no-hitter ever recorded. So yeah, not a whole lot went wrong, just one day after the Oakland A’s dismantled the...

Diamondbacks 2, White Sox 15: Worst. Spring. Game. Ever.

Or, at least, certainly ranked. Record: 12-11-1. Change on 2017: -1. Through seven innings this afternoon, the Diamondbacks were being murdered. They had conceded 15 runs to the White Sox and were also being no-hit. Know how many games in the entirety of major-league baseball history have combined those two things? One: Jake Arrietta’s no-hitter in 2016, when the Cubs demolished the Reds, 16-0. While there are no formal records of such things in spring training, I’d be pretty impressed if anything had ever matched it. So, all hail Alberto Rosario, a 31-year-old catcher with 44 career...

Richard works in bee game; Renfroe still a pitch hunter

The Padres’ opening-day starter hasn’t pitched in a real spring training game since March 9, throwing instead on a diamond surrounded by aluminum bleachers in games featuring mostly minor leaguers. Clayton Richard’s young son sat in the dugout during one of his two starts on the back fields at...

Ever wondered what really happens at Rangers spring training? We went behind the scenes to find out

Drew Robinson, in his second major-league spring training with the Rangers, is vying for a significant role this season. Robinson, who turns 26 in April, entered camp as part of the competition to split time in left field. To confirm his spot, Robinson is playing more often than other guys, which makes for lots of long days. Here is a look, with accompanying photos from Dallas Morning News photographer Smiley Pool, inside one day in the life of a young player at spring training:5:45 a.m.For a 1 p.m. game, Drew Robinson rolls out of bed about 5:20 a.m. during spring training. Spring training: Yankees vs. Rays

The Yankees take on the Rays as we open up the final week of spring training The Yankees are now in their last full week of spring training games before the start of the season. Division rivals the Tampa Bay Rays come into town to face something of a bullpen day from the Yankees. David Hale is set to start the 6:35 PM game. Everyone in tonight’s starting lineup could make the team for Opening Day. About half of them—guys like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Didi Gregorius—are projected to be starters, with the rest as potential bench pieces. There is enough room on the roster to...

No Ronald Acuna on Opening Day? Understandable, alas

Ronald Acuna’s spring slash line -- .432/.519/.727. No, spring training stats don’t mean much, and yes, Acuna is 20, which means his chance will come very soon. Still, the news that the Braves have assigned him to minor-league camp, which means he won’t make the team’s Opening Day roster, is slightly disappointing.

There’s more to Greg Bird’s slow spring than the usual noise, but he thinks he’s found a fix

Spring Training is, without question, the worst time of year to evaluate players. Basically no one is in midseason form, rarely do we know what a player is working on on a given day, and the quality of competition varies wildly. Not just day-to-day either. Inning-to-inning. A hitter could face a Cy Young candidate one […] The post There’s more to Greg Bird’s slow spring than the usual noise, but he thinks he’s found a fix appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Cubs vs. Reds at Goodyear preview, Monday 3/19, 8:05 CT

Another spring night game for the Cubs. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — Jon Lester is starting tonight’s game. And one of the things that makes it look like Lester will rebound to his 2016 performance is his level of comfort with Willson Contreras: Willson Contreras, who took the Lester reins when [David] Ross retired after the 2016 World Series, might provide even more cover for Lester than Ross if his first year with Lester was any indication. “This spring training is much easier,” Lester said earlier in camp. “I would imagine especially for Willy as well. Nobody’s making a big deal...

Ronald Acuna assigned to minor league camp

Silverman: Craig Kimbrel grateful after ‘unbelievable’ treatment of infant daughter

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose, under heaven...” – Ecclesiastes FORT MYERS – The meaning of faith and the power of prayer seldom make public appearances during spring training. On Monday, Craig Kimbrel brought both back to Red Sox camp. After a nearly three-week absence to attend to the second of three scheduled heart surgeries for his daughter Lydia, who is barely 4-1/2 months old, Kimbrel walked onto a back field in his uniform, dug his cleats into the moist clay, bent over and cocked his right arm into its familiar haunted bear-hug hang before rearing...

Red Sox 6, Phillies 5: The depth pieces and minor leaguers combine for a walk off

Some spring training drama! The Red Sox have now won seven in a row, and this time it came in dramatic fashion. A rough start from Chris Sale and an inability to score off Phillies pitcher Drew Hutchison put Boston in an early hole, but some depth pieces and straight-up minor leaguers came together to put up four runs in the ninth for a walk off win. Can you feel the excitement?! A rough Sale Day The Red Sox sent their ace out to the mound on Monday, but it was not the best day for Chris Sale as he was roughed up a bit and didn’t seem to have his typical command. Tampa Bay Rays free agent target: Melvin Upton Jr.

Bossman Junior is a free agent once again This morning the Cleveland Indians released a pair of former Tampa Bay Rays signed to minor league pacts in catcher Ryan Hannigan and outfielder Melvin “BJ” Upton. Last week Marc Topkin suggested the Rays could see a reunion with Peter Bourjos for the RH outfield role. Bourjos is currently on a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, but is unlikely to make the team’s opening day roster. Last year the Rays brought in Bourjos at the end of spring training after he was released by the Chicago White Sox, and he went on to patrol center field for...
