Gene Frenette: UCF learns painfully why they call it March Madness

Before addressing an impressive run to the Sweet 16 by Florida State or the predictable end to Florida’s hoops season, a much-deserved bow of respect for the heartbroken UCF Knights. They might have been a victim of the unluckiest roll of the basketball in NCAA tournament history. As euphoric as UCF was about its perfect football season two years ago, the heartache from seeing Aubrey Dawkins’ buzzer-beating follow shot that would have beaten Duke and [...]

Those Last 8.1 Seconds Of The Duke-UCF Thriller

Talk about close shaves When you watch the last 8.1 seconds of the Duke-UCF game closely you notice a few things. First, it was a good thing that Zion Williamson fouled Tacko Fall out on Duke’s last possession other than the final rebound. Second, UCF wanted to get the ball to point guard BJ Taylor and ran him through a screen set by #35 Colin Smith which was intended to pick off Tre Jones. Jones went around it though and forced Taylor out farther than expected, out into the March Madness logo (his foot was in the H). We’ve talked before about how Jones has a knack for running in a...

John Calipari is made for March Madness

March is when UK and Swaggy Cal make memories. The Kentucky Wildcats are off to the Sweet 16 after a gut-check win over the Wofford Terriers. It was the eighth time in John Calipari’s 10 years at Kentucky in which he’s led Kentucky past the first weekend, the most of any coach over that span. During Calipari’s 10 seasons at UK, Kentucky owns more NCAA Tournament wins (30), Final Four appearances (four), Elite Eight berths (six) and Sweet 16 showings (eight) than any other school. It’s safe to say that March Madness has been great for the Wildcats under Calipari. March is also...

Willie Cauley-Stein salutes Kentucky with his shoes

March Madness was a great time to break these out. These days the NBA has plenty examples of players making fashion statements, and Willie Cauley-Stein is definitely known as a guy that is interested in his style. Tonight, he wore a pair of shoes that commemorated his time on the 2014-2015 Kentucky Wildcats team and they were ridiculously cool. I have to admit, sometimes Willie can get a little questionable with his wardrobe decisions, but these shoes looked great and were a special way to honor his former team during March Madness. The scripting on the shoes read “Willie Cauley Stein...

Sister Jean picks Kentucky to make the Final Four

That’s a good endorsement to have. The best part about March Madness are the Cinderella teams that come out of nowhere and make a run in the NCAA Tournament. In 2018, the Ramblers of Loyola-Chicago stole the show and danced themselves all the way to the Final Four with wins over Miami, Tennessee, Nevada and Kansas State before losing to Michigan in the national semifinals. It’s usually just the team that wins over the nation, but the Ramblers were different as their team chaplain Jean Schmidt, a.k.a Sister Jean, became a celebrity on college basketball’s biggest stage. Even...
