BMO Champions Cup returns this week

BMO Champions Cup returns this week

The second annual BMO Champions Cup kicks off this week up at the BMO Training Ground. Toronto FC Academy will be welcoming the best sides in Ontario with representatives from the OPDL (Ontario Player Development League) and the OASL (Ontario Academy Soccer League) in U-13 and U-15 age groups. As the ‘champions’ in the name suggests, clubs earn their invitations through league and cup play. Six teams will be split into two groups of three in each age class, playing the other two sides in their group; the winners of each group will meet in the final. In U-13, TFC Academy 2005 will...

Who We Were (Part 1): Gilberto

Who We Were (Part 1): Gilberto

A player who unfortunately fell through the cracks of a rebuilding phase in Toronto. Throughout this long off-season I want to look back on some of Toronto FC’s former players to see what impact they had on their team, determining how successful their stay in Toronto was — or, perhaps, what needed to be different? At the end of the 2013 regular season, Toronto FC finished third-last in the league, and were tied for the the second-worst offence in the league. They needed an offensive shakeup, so they went into the transfer market in the off-season in search of some quality offensive...

Toronto FC exempt from MLS expansion draft

Toronto FC exempt from MLS expansion draft

The Reds are one of five teams FC Cincinnati can't select from. MLS has announced the structure of this year’s expansion draft, where FC Cincinnati will attempt to fill out their roster ahead of their jump from USL to the top flight. It'll take place December 11, but Toronto FC fans need not fret: the Reds are exempt from this year’s draft. Since TFC lost Raheem Edwards to LAFC in last year's selection, they (along with the four other clubs who lost players to LAFC — the Seattle Sounders, San Jose Earthquakes, Columbus Crew SC and Sporting Kansas City) will watch from the sidelines...

Footy Talks: What should Toronto FC do about the keeper position?

Footy Talks: What should Toronto FC do about the keeper position?

Like everything else with the club, was it just an off year between the posts. Oh, the silly season. We know this one could be particularly long and intriguing for Toronto FC after the way that their 2018 season concluded. Even before the year had ended rumours started popping up about who may, or may not, be back next season. Well we now have our first rumour of the offseason, and it is a bit of a surprising one. Outlets out of Brazil are reporting that Toronto FC is looking to bring in a young Brazilian keeper from Sao Paulo on a year long loan. Now there are many positions on the...

How will wingers fit into Toronto FC’s attack?

How will wingers fit into Toronto FC’s attack?

Greg Vanney wants to see attacking wide players brought in this winter, but there’s a reason TFC haven’t used them often to this point. Tim Bezbatchenko is on the clock. Perhaps it was intentional, or perhaps it was just Greg Vanney being Greg Vanney — a coach who enjoys discussing the finer details of the game and has never sought to close himself off to the media. Whether he wanted to get a few things on the record or was simply answering the question put to him, though, Vanney laid out quite a specific shopping list for his general manager during the team’s end-of-season...
