Mets vs. Braves Game 2 Recap: Late night scare

Mets vs. Braves Game 2 Recap: Late night scare

Things got dicey in the end, but the Mets hang on. After getting beaten up in the afternoon game, the Mets hung on to win 3-2 in the second half of the doubleheader. Seth Lugo led the way with a fantastic start, while Travis d’Arnaud carried the offense with an RBI double and a solo home run. Jeurys Familia secured the save after some poor defense made things close in the ninth. After Lugo worked around a single from Nick Markakis in a quick top of the first, the Mets put together a rally in the bottom half. Brandon Nimmo led off with a double that should have been caught...

Mets vs. Braves Game 1 Recap: That could’ve gone better

Mets vs. Braves Game 1 Recap: That could’ve gone better

The first game of the doubleheader featured some bad pitching. It was a starting pitching matchup of two rookie pitchers, but one fared much better than the the other in the Mets’ 9-2 loss. When the season started I’m sure nobody could have predicted a game where Chris Flexen would be getting the start and Phillip Evans would be the cleanup hitter in a late September game against a division rival, yet here we are. The first few innings were surprisingly well played by two teams well out of the race in the final week of the season. Flexen and Atlanta starter Lucas Sims...

Final Score: Mets 3, Braves 2—Everything’s better at night

Final Score: Mets 3, Braves 2—Everything’s better at night

The evening game went much better for the Mets. After being blown out in the afternoon portion of their doubleheader with the Braves, the Mets bounced back with a 3-2 win in the nitecap. Seth Lugo was fantastic, tossing six innings of scoreless ball and striking out seven, and Jeurys Familia worked around a couple of defensive blunders in a shaky ninth inning for his second save since returning from the disabled list. The Mets squandered several opportunities to score with both poor baserunning and four double plays. Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis d’Arnaud both managed RBIs in the third,...

Final Score: Braves 9, Mets 2— Almost over

Final Score: Braves 9, Mets 2— Almost over

One down, only six more games to go. Chris Flexen was cruising until it all fell apart on him in the Mets’ 9-2 loss. With the Braves already leading 1-0, the downward spiral started with a hit by Atlanta starter Lucas Sims in the sixth. After back-to-back walks to load the bases, Flexen’s day was over. Josh Smoker managed to get Freddie Freeman out on an infield popup, but Nick Markakis’s double brought home two runs and later a sacrifice fly made the score 4-0. The bullpen did not fair much better. The Braves later tacked on a run against Erik Goeddel, Kevin McGowan got hit hard to...

Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, September 18-24

Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, September 18-24

A quick review of how the Mets’ pitchers fared over the past week You know the drill when it comes to these meters. So let’s get right to the fascinating part of this one: There were two distinct groups of Mets pitchers—good and bad—over the past seven days. And the way they broke down alphabetically put them into an order in which there are green and red chunks of this meter and no variations from that pattern. These are the sorts of things that sound exciting when your team is very bad. Let’s try to keep things a little more concise, too. Jerry Blevins, Chasen...
