Packers’ spring practices are all defined by veterans skipping minicamp

Packers’ spring practices are all defined by veterans skipping minicamp

The head coach has approached the offseason differently for the past few years, Who wouldn’t love a week off from work? NFL players are not that different from the average person in that respect, especially when it comes to offseason workouts. Over the past few years, the Green Bay Packers have made a habit of letting veteran players leave town during the week of mandatory minicamp, and it has become both a tradition and an appreciated perk for players who have been in the league a while. That appreciation is not lost on head coach Mike McCarthy, who instituted the policy in its current...

Packers’ top players’ Madden NFL 19 rankings leaked and we have questions

Packers’ top players’ Madden NFL 19 rankings leaked and we have questions

A few of these rankings are baffling to us as Packers fans. Each year’s edition of the Madden NFL Football video game comes with debates over players’ rankings, and Madden NFL 19 is sure to be no exception. In fact, the current working rankings for this year’s version of the game leaked out over the weekend and have started some conversation among NFL fans. The video, which you can find here, was published to Youtube by an EA “Game Changer” user, which is essentially a glorified game tester and social media presence. This lends credence to the belief that these rankings are...

Monday Curds: A few new Packers are focusing on the ‘foot’ in football

Monday Curds: A few new Packers are focusing on the ‘foot’ in football

And at least for today, neither of the players we’re talking about is a kicker or punter. Since players only touch the pigskin with their feet a few times each game, the name of the sport — football — seems an odd choice. For a pair of new Green Bay Packers, however, the offseason has very much been about their feet, even if they’re not supposed to be coming into contact with the ball. Sure, rookie punter JK Scott has been booming punts in spring practices, but we’ll worry about that another day. Instead, it’s footwork, speed, and agility that are the focus of today’s Cheese...

Packers release complete schedule for 2018 Training Camp

Packers release complete schedule for 2018 Training Camp

The Packers have 14 open practices for the second straight year, as camp begins on July 26th. The Green Bay Packers open their training camp for the 2018 season in just over five weeks, and this weekend the team announced the full public practice schedule for the summer. Not including the annual Family Night Scrimmage at Lambeau Field, this year’s schedule has 14 practices that are scheduled to be open to the public. That is the same number as in 2017. Each open practice will be held outside at Ray Nitschke Field, just across Oneida Street from Lambeau Field. Unlike last season, however,...

Packers Best Plays of 2017: Adams torches Steelers, but falls outside our top ten

Packers Best Plays of 2017: Adams torches Steelers, but falls outside our top ten

This great pass-and-catch gave the Packers a lead, but it couldn’t quite crack our top ten. As we continue to prepare for the start of our countdown of the Packers’ best plays of 2017, we keep going with an honorable mention — one of the plays that just missed out on our top ten. Ten APC contributors voted on last year’s best plays, and we’ll begin our official countdown on Monday. But for now, let’s look back on a great play from Brett Hundley and Davante Adams in the latter stages of the season. The Situation It’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and the Packers are in...

Packers Best Plays of 2017: John Fox’s blown challenge earns honorable mention

Packers Best Plays of 2017: John Fox’s blown challenge earns honorable mention

Schadenfreude and the hilarity of this overturned play gives it a spot just outside the top ten on our countdown. Now that the Green Bay Packers are finished with minicamp, we enter the long five-week layoff before the opening of training camp on July 26th. As has become an annual tradition here at APC, we have compiled a list of the Packers’ best plays from the previous season, though this year’s list was a bit tougher to finalize than that of years past. The 2017 season was a challenging one for the Packers, with Aaron Rodgers’ collarbone injury putting a damper on much of the...

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Practice updates & discussion for June 14

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Practice updates & discussion for June 14

The final day of spring practices is here, so join us for the last day of Packers football before training camp starts in late July. The third and final day of minicamp is here for the Green Bay Packers, which means that today’s practice will be the last one of the offseason workout program for the team. After today, players can go their separate ways as they take a break of roughly six weeks before the start of training camp on July 26th. However, the show still goes on today, as the team does have that final practice scheduled for 11:30 AM at Ray Nitschke Field. Once again, today’s...

Thursday Curds: Expectations of Packers’ tight ends; Taysom Hill hype is off the rails

Thursday Curds: Expectations of Packers’ tight ends; Taysom Hill hype is off the rails

Hill is the ‘heir apparent’ to Drew Brees? Let’s just slow that roll a little bit. While the Green Bay Packers’ veterans do whatever it is that they’re doing with a week off, the team has given one of its younger players his release from camp as well for a personal situation. Thankfully for running back Ty Montgomery, it’s good news: he and his wife just had a baby, and all appears to be well with the newly-expanded family. Back on the practice field, the tight end position is running on a skeleton crew in camp, thanks to the fact that the team’s top three options at the...

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Live practice updates for June 13

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Live practice updates for June 13

Day two of the Green Bay Packers’ 2018 minicamp is here, as 74 players on the 90-man roster continue with another day of practice. Once again, practice is scheduled to start at 11:30 local time and to be open to the public as the team works in the middle of a fairly pleasant day with temperatures in the upper 70s. As discussed on Tuesday, the Packers excused sixteen veterans from minicamp for the week, giving any player who has at least five completed NFL seasons under his belt the week off. Of course, that means no Aaron Rodgers, so Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer get to compete all week...

Packers Pro Shop has some odd clearance prices on former Packers’ jerseys

Packers Pro Shop has some odd clearance prices on former Packers’ jerseys

The steep discount on a fan favorite’s merch seems surprising at first glance. Selling merchandise featuring former players at clearance prices is a time-honored tradition for sports teams. When players leave in free agency, get traded, or get released, teams need to unload their inventories of jerseys and t-shirts somehow, and dropping the price is the best way to convince fans to still buy the merch. But sometimes, the supply of these items dictates that strange things happen with the way they’re priced, and we are seeing that at the Packers Pro Shop right now. Two wide receivers from...

Wednesday Curds: Spriggs & Biegel look to stay healthy & earn bigger roles

Wednesday Curds: Spriggs & Biegel look to stay healthy & earn bigger roles

These two young Packers need to be full-go in training camp to get the playing time they want in 2018. For two young Green Bay Packers players, the 2017 season was defined by injuries. Jason Spriggs and Vince Biegel both missed the first half of the regular season, as Spriggs suffered an injured kneecap towards the end of training camp and Biegel had foot surgery after his first practice in a Packers uniform. This year, both players are healthy and are in line for a significant uptick in playing time. Spriggs is the front-runner to start at right tackle with Bryan Bulaga still recovering...

Packers’ Ha Ha Clinton-Dix reveals reason for not attending OTAs

Packers’ Ha Ha Clinton-Dix reveals reason for not attending OTAs

Clinton-Dix confirmed that a death in the family was why he didn’t practice in Green Bay until this week. Voluntary workouts are just that — voluntary. And although fans of the NFL and the Green Bay Packers in particular are used to most of their veteran players attending OTAs and the rest of the offseason workout program, there can be any number of reasons why a player might choose to skip those workouts, which — again — are voluntary. In the case of Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, he revealed on Tuesday following the team’s minicamp practice that he had an awfully good reason...

Packers excuse veterans from mandatory minicamp, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix practices

Green Bay got its starting free safety on the field today while letting 16 veteran players have the week off. The Green Bay Packers were outside on Ray Nitschke Field on Tuesday, practicing as part of the first day of the team’s mandatory minicamp. However, many of the team’s most recognizable players were nowhere to be seen, as they had been given permission to skip the week’s practices. All of the 16 veteran players whom the Packers excused from this week’s minicamp have six or more years of experience, according to Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Here are those...

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Practice updates & live discussion for June 12th

Packers 2018 Minicamp: Practice updates & live discussion for June 12th

Day one of minicamp is here, as the Packers practice in front of the public for three straight days. After just three short weeks, the Green Bay Packers’ Organized Team Activities are over. But there’s good news! Because today, the team hits the field for the first of three straight days of open practices as part of mandatory minicamp. In recent years, the Packers have often excused a group of experienced veterans from minicamp, and the team has elected to do so once again this summer. That means that a total of 16 players, including Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews, and...

Packers ‘What-Ifs’: the 2014 NFCCG, Nelson’s ACL, & Rodgers’ collarbone

Packers ‘What-Ifs’: the 2014 NFCCG, Nelson’s ACL, & Rodgers’ collarbone

One of these what-ifs is obvious, but we also look at a pair of injuries that significantly changed the franchise’s trajectory. It’s getting close to the official start of summer, and we’re almost ready for NFL teams to break for six weeks between minicamp and training camp. With that comes the first Theme Week of the year for the SB Nation NFL sites. This week, the theme is “What If?” The Green Bay Packers have one particularly notable “What If” moment in recent years — surely everyone can think of the biggest one — but we have a pair of additional lingering questions...
