Yankees 0, Marlins 0: Spring training baseball!

Yankees 0, Marlins 0: Spring training baseball!

Photo by New York Yankees/ Not much happened down in Tampa on Thursday night. Every time you go to a ballgame, you have a chance to see something you’ve never seen before. I’m not going to say that today’s result was unique, but for the 8,361 people at Steinbrenner Field, it’s something you don’t see very often. The Yankees were held scoreless, but so were the Marlins, and in fine spring training form, today’s game ended in a 0-0 draw. One thing I really like about pitching prospect Clayton Beeter is how quickly he works. I was unable to watch this one...

NYY vs. MIA: Clayton Beeter vs. Ryan Weathers

Photo by New York Yankees/ The Yanks welcome the Fish to Tampa. After the day off yesterday, we get a new round of exhibition baseball from Tampa, as the Yankees take on the Marlins in Grapefruit League action. Clayton Beeter, one of the on-the-rise pitching prospects who could see MLB time in 2024, will be on the hill for the second time this spring. He struck out a trio of Tigers in his only other appearance, although Detroit did tag him for two runs. Recent free agent signee Tim Anderson will make his spring debut for the Marlins, batting second and at his customary...

NYY News: Rizzo’s rebound

Photo by New York Yankees/ Rizzo’s 2023 regrets; Yankee source lobbied for Stroman; Jones and Warren raising eyebrows; Peraza’s future in question New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Anthony Rizzo’s post-concussion syndrome was one of the major setbacks of the 2023 Yankee season, and a big rebound from the first baseman would go a long way to making the 2024 team a better squad. Rizzo admitted that he would have tried to play through his brain injury down the stretch last year, even if it wasn’t best for the team. After check-ins with his doctors in the fall,...

NYY News: Hal’s still in the game

Photo by Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire via Steinbrenner “not done yet”; Schmidt looks for another step forward; Stanton needs a new swing; three Yanks among game’s top 10 New York Post | Greg Joyce: Hal Steinbrenner acknowledged the Yankees will be over $300 million in payroll costs this year, but the club isn’t ruling out further moves if they can be positive additions. With two of the top five pitchers on the market still available, Steinbrenner didn’t commit to targeting someone like Blake Snell, but after a fairly active offseason it wouldn’t surprise me...

Why won’t the Yankees meet expectations?

Why won’t the Yankees meet expectations?

Photo by New York Yankees/ Taking the under on the team’s construction. Yesterday was the day when we all had stars in our eyes. Today is the day to be a hater. Depending on who you ask, the Yankees are tabled for about 92 wins via the various public projection systems, and let’s talk about why they’re not going to get there. The Boo-Boos The Ace said it himself last week: the club gets injured too much. Every team is going to have its share of injured list visits, but the Yankees saw the third-most player days lost to injury in 2023, and have been in the top 10...

Why will the Yankees exceed expectations?

Why will the Yankees exceed expectations?

Photo by New York Yankees/ Smashing the over on the 2024 season. There are no atheists in foxholes, and there shouldn’t be any pessimists in spring training. Carlos Rodón is chucking, Giancarlo Stanton looks like a whole new athlete, and Juan Soto is in Yankee navy. Hope truly does spring eternal, and it’s not just because of social media hype — the 2024 Yankees should be a good baseball team! FanGraphs pegs the Yankees as the second-best team in the AL with 89 wins while PECOTA actually has them a little better, falling in between 93 and 94 wins. Projections by...

The A-Rod Trade turns 20

The A-Rod Trade turns 20

Photo credit should read TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Can you believe that it’s been 20 years since A-Rod officially became a Yankee? Note: This story originally ran in 2022 during a previous Pinstripe Alley series. Sometimes, landing the game’s best player is hard. You have to identify something in a college or high school bat that’s just different, or you have to find a way to mold a raw international free agent into a complete product. And then, sometimes, landing the game’s best player is easy — swoop in after a deal collapses and ... Trade Details: Alex...

Yankees trade for Clayton Andrews, move Scott Effross to IL

Photo by Patrick McDermott/ The Yankees kicked off spring training with a trade (and injury news). Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced during his press conference this afternoon to open spring training that Scott Effross underwent surgery on his back in December. The reliever will likely be eligible for a return in the summer. While that loss of bullpen depth was slightly offset by the forthcoming return of Lou Trivino, it appears Brian Cashman isn’t quite done with the relief corps just yet. Almost immediately after Boone’s presser, the Yankees made a swap of...

Gaming out an Anthony Volpe extension

Gaming out an Anthony Volpe extension

Photo by Corey Sipkin/MLB Photos via Does it make sense to lock up the sophomore? Over the last decade or so, the Yankees haven’t loved extending pre-arb players — with some success and some failure. Had they signed Aaron Judge to a 10-year deal after his 2017 season, he’d currently be arguably the most valuable player in baseball on an AAV basis. Had the team extended Gary Sánchez after the same season, we’d look at that deal quite differently. We’re in the swing of #ExtensionSzn, with Colt Keith, Jackson Chourio, and Bobby Witt Jr. all agreeing to deals in...

Yankees 2024 Season Preview: Jasson Domínguez

Yankees 2024 Season Preview: Jasson Domínguez

Photo by Jim McIsaac/ What to expect from a returning Martian? One of the hardest guys on the roster to project for 2024, Jasson Domínguez had a rip roaring debut — for all of eight games — before being sidelined with Tommy John surgery. The center fielder will spend a chunk of the year rehabbing his rebuilt elbow, and the Yankees themselves seem to be tamping down expectations. 2023 statistics: 8 games, 33 plate appearances, .258/.303/.677, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 162 wRC+, 6.1 BB%, 24.2 K%,-2 Defensive Runs Saved, 0 Outs Above Average, 0.3 fWAR 2024 ZiPS projections: 131...
