Why Football Outsiders isn’t high on O.J. Howard and DeSean Jackson, either

The stats analysts aren’t optimistic about the Bucs this season. Football Outsiders has not been optimistic about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ chances and development this year, to say the least. We talked about the general reasons for that pessimism with them last week, but we delve into the details a little more today. Why are DeSean Jackson and O.J. Howard not going to transform the Bucs offense this year? What could the Bucs have done differently? Will Jameis Winston be much better, or mostly the same questions. Football Outsiders’ Andrew Potter has the answers to those questions,...

Bucs sign a tackle, waive a tackle

Bucs sign a tackle, waive a tackle

Marquis Lucas is the latest addition to the Bucs roster. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have claimed tackle Marquis Lucas off and waived tackle Austin Albrecht. They signed Albrecht just two days ago. Life is dark and full of errors. Lucas was an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia last year, and has spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons since then, but wasn’t on any team’s regular season roster. The Bucs could use some tackle depth with Demar Dotson out for now, as it’s still unclear how serious Dotson’s injury really is. Lucas would give them...

Buccaneers sign Mariel Cooper, waive Quayvon Hicks

Buccaneers sign Mariel Cooper, waive Quayvon Hicks

More preseason roster churn. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed cornerback Mariel Cooper and waived running back Quayvon Hicks, the team announced today. Cooper was an undrafted free agent out of The Citadel last year who was originally signed by Washington, but did not make the roster. At 5’11”, 192 lbs. he has okay size, and that’s about all I know of him. Hicks never really got a shot. Despite being listed as a running back, he’s more of a fullback, and the Bucs may not even carry one on the regular season roster. So this is just your regular preseason roster churn that...

Jameis Winston’s accuracy is up 10%

Jameis Winston’s accuracy is up 10%

Winston has looked much better in practice and preseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are really happy with Jameis Winston’s improvement this preseason, and one reason is the numbers they’re seeing. Head coach Dirk Koetter said that Winston’s accuracy in practice went up by a whopping 10% compared to last year “Well, the percentages would say that. The numbers we keep in practice are up about that same percent – about 10 percent higher than he was in training camp last year. There’s a big enough body of throws in there that if you were a stat guy, you could probably say...

Buccaneers sign a tackle and a cornerback

Buccaneers sign a tackle and a cornerback

The Bucs replaced a few injured players. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed a tackle and a cornerback after Thursday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bucs announced that tackle Austin Albright and cornerback Vernon Harris will join the team, for now. Albrecht went undrafted out of Utah State this year, where he started 25 games. At 6’5”, 300 lbs. he has pretty good size, and that’s basically all I know about him. Harris was an undrafted free agent out of Dartmouth last year, and was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. He missed his rookie season with an injury....

Bucs tackle Demar Dotson is getting an MRI

Bucs tackle Demar Dotson is getting an MRI

The Bucs don’t have much depth behind Dotson. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have an issue at right tackle. Veteran Demar Dotson had to leave Thursday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a groin injury, and Dirk Koetter today said Dotson will have to get an MRI, though he wouldn’t comment on the seriousness of the injury. The fact that Dotson was almost immediately ruled out after suffering the injury and now the news of this MRI imply that Dotson may be missing a significant amount of time, though, which would be a pretty big blow to the Bucs’ offense. Dotson turns 32...

“Expect a quantum leap” from Jameis Winston

“Expect a quantum leap” from Jameis Winston

The Bucs quarterback is ready to take the next step. Jameis Winston looked a little inconsistent against the Jacksonville Jaguars: very sharp at the start, a pair of boneheaded throws at the end of the second half, and a lack of red zone efficiency. Overall, though, Winston played well and it looks like he’s ready to take the next big step. That’s exactly what Sports Illustrated’s Andy Benoit thinks, too, in his big Bucs season preview. This may not be the year Jameis Winston becomes a top 10 quarterback, but expect a quantum leap. The Buccaneers understand exactly what Winston is: a...

Buccaneers-Jaguars final score: Key takeaways from Tampa Bay’s win

Buccaneers-Jaguars final score: Key takeaways from Tampa Bay’s win

The Buccaneers had an old-fashioned Bucs ball game in Jacksonville. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 12-8 in their second preseason game, completely shutting down their offense and looking pretty good on offense. Jameis Winston was sharp early on in the game, as was the offense as a whole. The Bucs and Jaguars both gave their starters a lot of playing time. One full half, to be precise, where many teams would give their starters maybe three drives in the second preseason game. It wasn’t until the end of the fourth quarter until the Jaguars got on the scoreboard, or...

Watch Gerald McCoy destroy the Jaguars offensive line

Watch Gerald McCoy destroy the Jaguars offensive line

Spoiler: McCoy’s still really good. Gerald McCoy is good. Really good. And he’s been wrecking the Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line throughout the second preseason game. He looks like he’s in All-Pro form again. That boy Gerald is hungry #SiegeTheDay #Bucs pic.twitter.com/GTui4HAORK— Zac BloBner (@ZacOnTheMic) August 18, 2017 Plays like that are just beautiful to watch, and exactly why Gerald McCoy is one of the best defensive tackles in the league. With Chris Baker and Clinton McDonald next to him, the Bucs have a very good group of defensive tackles. But McCoy’s problem...

Demar Dotson suffers groin injury during Buccaneers vs. Jaguars

Demar Dotson suffers groin injury during Buccaneers vs. Jaguars

He was immediately declared out for the game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have just lost their starting right tackle, at least for the immediate future. After playing one drive, Demar Dotson left the game with a groin injury and was almost immediately declared to be out for the remainder. That’s not good, and a quick announcement usually means it’s a fairly serious injury. Dotson’s been a mainstay at right tackle for years now, and is one of the better players at that position in the NFL. Losing him would be a pretty significant blow to the Bucs’ offense, which doesn’t have the...

The Jaguars would love O.J. Howard, and Blake Bortles is a mess

We talked about the Jaguars and tonight’s game with Big Cat Country. It’s week two of the 2017 NFL preseason and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Jacksonville Jaguars today. So we talked to Ryan Day of Big Cat Country about the game and the Jaguars, and he gave us some interesting answers. You can find our counter-Q&A over at Big Cat Country, incidentally. 1. What is up with Blake Bortles? Is he good, bad, good-in-potential, soon-to-be-replaced? What's going on? Man, if I knew, I'd be driving down to EverBank Field myself and knocking down Tom Coughlin's door. The short answer is:...

Buccaneers-Jaguars preseason 2017 game time, TV schedule and channel, stream, announcers and more

The Bucs play the Jaguars tonight. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play their first nationally televised game of 2017 tonight, when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville. ESPN thought an intrastate rivalry preseason game was actually interesting, and gave us Jon Gruden as commentator to boot—he can gush about Jameis Winston all game long. For the Bucs, this game will be pretty interesting though not crucial. They’ll let their starters play for almost a full half, which is pretty long for a second preseason game. Key: getting out of this game fully healthy. And also some continued...
